Call of Dutyis reportedly in line for a new release in 2023. While this may seem like non-news to some since the blockbuster first-person shooter franchise has received a new game each year sinceCall of Duty 2 wasreleased in 2005, it has been reported that the latest entryModern Warfare 2will have a two-year life cycle, leading many fans to believe that the nextCall of Dutygame will only arrive in 2024.

As of writing, it has only been a few months since the most recentCall of Dutygame,Modern Warfare 2,was released as a sequel to 2019’sModern Warfare. With these games, Activision officially rebooted the timeline that began withCall of Duty 4: Modern Warfarein 2007 and wrapped up withModern Warfare 3in 2011. The rebootedModern Warfareretcons the original timeline, instead taking place in the same timeline as theBlack Opsseries. As far as reboots go,Modern Warfarehas been a commercial success, and the 2019 game also netted a few prestigious awards among the dozens it was nominated for, in stark contrast toCall of Duty: Vanguardwhich only received a handful of nominations.

Activision is planning “the next full annual premium release” in theCall of Dutyfranchise for 2023. This could mean the two-year life cycle forCall of Duty games isoff the table, and players can expect an entirely new entry into the franchise. Earlier reports have suggested that players can instead expecta massive expansion forModern Warfare 2, supposedly developed by Sledgehammer Games. The news comes thanks to the latest financial earnings report from Activision as the company seeks to build on the momentum it has gathered in the last year, leaning heavily on franchises likeCall of DutyandDiablo, the latter of which is confirmed to be getting a new entry on June 6.

While itendures as one of the most popular first-person shooters, many players have their preferences within the franchise and lament the yearly release cycle since each newCall of Dutygame comes with new maps and mechanicsto learn and a yearly entry fee of $70, not including the battle pass, which costs players an additional $10. According to Statista the average gamer in the US spends roughly $24 a month on video games, which equates to four games at that price point per year.

With so many great games coming out all the time, it’s unsurprising that someCall of Dutylovers might feel a little put out that nearly a quarter of their yearly spend goes towards keeping abreast of the competitive scene. The prospect of post-launchcampaign content being added toModern Warfare 2is highly appealing to those who wish for the additional consistency afforded by a longer life cycle between eachCall of Duty.
