If any actor had a big year in 2021, it was Andrew Garfield. On top of making his triumphant return as Peter Parker inSpider-Man: No Way Home, earning some long overdue redemption for the Amazing Spider-Man movies, he was alsonominated for an Academy Award for his leading role inTick, Tick … Boom!.Along with those projects, Garfield also co-starred in The Eyes Of Tammy Faye (which earned his co-star, Jessica Chastain, the Academy Award for Best Actress). Garfield’s latest project is the Hulu true crime dramaUnder The Banner Of Heaven.

However, despite all of this momentum, the 38-year-old actor has decided to take a step back from the acting world, at least for a little while. Speaking withPeople, Garfield talked about his desire to step away from the stage and just take some time to be a normal person. “I’m actually really happy and excited to be very quiet and very still and take some time to just be,” he said.

Garfield spoke about what he sees as the assumed obligation to constantly be putting work out. “Like it’s so tempting to live in that way of just always onto the next thing,” he said, adding “But actually, and I know it’s a privilege that I get to even consider that, to actually take time.” The actor drew inspiration from the likes of Gymnast Simone Biles and Rapper Kendrick Lamar, both of whom took breaks from their careers (though Garfield notes correctly that Lamar has a new album coming out in May).

It’s understandable that the actor may be feeling like he needs some time for himself after the whirlwind year he’s had, which on top of all of his movie roles, also includednon-stop deflection of questions about whether he would appear inNo Way Homeor not. Although stalwart fans had pretty much figured out that his appearance was a given, he still had to do the work of denying his involvement whatsoever. Fans were so happy to see him in the movie that there has been an increasing demand for Garfield’s version of the webhead to geta proper ending in a third Amazing Spider-Man movie.

Also important to note is that Garfield did not say he was leaving the acting world for good. That would be a real shame considering his talent. However, it would ultimately answer the question of whether he would be the version of Spider-Man who ends up facing off againstSony’s new batch of villains like Morbius, Venom, and Kraven the Hunter. Even if that isn’t the case, at least Garfield’s Spider-Man finally got to make up for Gwen Stacy’s death by heroically saving Zendaya’s MJ from a fatal fall.
