Anne Hathaway, star of the Apple TV Plus miniseriesWeCrashed, may be best known for her work in rom-coms and dramas, but she’s also had her fair share of sci-fi projects in the past. FromThe Dark Knight RisestoInterstellar, the Oscar-winning actress is clearly not one to shy away from the fantasy genre. Just take her latest look, for example, which was inspired by James Cameron’sAvatar.
Hathaway recently surprised her fans with a series of posts where she was transformed into anAvatarfor an episode ofWeCrashed. The first photo was a selfie that featured her in blue face paint, feather-laden beaded braids, white freckles, and the characteristicNa’vi forehead striping.

The mostimpressive part of theAvatarlook, however, was the nose and ears, which were achieved using prosthetics to widen her bridge and elongate her cartilages, respectively. Hathaway looks almost unrecognizable under all that special effects makeup. Shouting out her makeup artists Molly Stern and Stephanie Pasicov, she explained in her caption that the two managed to get through the entire process in just an hour and a half. That said, removing the blue paint was a different story. Hathaway said it took her weeks to get all of it off, and there are even a couple of photos in the carousel showing several artists attempting to scrub it away.
According toWeCrashedshowrunners Lee Eisenberg and Drew Crevello, the costume choice was based on real life. In the show, Hathaway’s character Rebekah Neumann attendsa Halloween partyat her child’s school, and she goes all out on herAvatar-inspired costume. Apparently, this aligns with the real-life Rebekah Neumann, who has a very splashy taste in Halloween costumes. Eisenberg and Crevello said they really wanted to get those small details right, and they hired a researcher who had to talk toa lotof people within Adam and Rebekah’s inner circle to get the inside scoop on them.
Unfortunately for fans, the makeup reveal was simply intended to tease theWeCrashedepisode, and there has not been any confirmation that Hathaway will be a member of the cast or involved inthe upcomingAvatarsequel, even though she looks the part. Still, we can always hope that her experience transforming into an avatar will inspire her to pursue more sci-fi projects in the future.
WeCrashedis now streaming episodes 1 to 6 on Apple TV Plus andAvatar 2is scheduled to hit theaters on June 02, 2025.
