Being one of the most popular online multiplayer games of the last couple of years,Apex Legendshas a long and storied history of dealing with hacks and cheats. Some of the game’s players are now calling for more drastic measures when it comes to anti-cheat implementations, citingValorantandRainbow Six: Siegeas some examples of what to do.

Respawn Entertainment has been hard at work dealing with all manner of cheaters inApex Legends, though the company has got a long road ahead in this regard. Even though neitherValorantnorSiegeare perfect when it comes to anti-cheat features,Apex Legends' community believes that these games have a better way of dealing with (repeat) offenders.

Of course, Respawn Entertainment did haveplans for combating cheaters inApex Legends. As of June 2021, Respawn intended to hire more people to handle manual bans, develop better DDoS management tools, and look for ways to single-out cheaters faster than before. The game’s player base, however, is now calling for permanent hardware bans and phone number requirements on top of that.

With28 million new players inApex Legendsover the course of 2021, it’s a given that at least some number of them would turn out to be cheaters. Odds are, too, that at least some of these player accounts were created by continuous cheaters, so taking a feature likeSiege’s phone number requirement would be one way to at least thin their numbers further. The question is, then, if putting this requirement up would be worth the trouble in the long run.

Hardware bans, too, are a tricky business, though it’s worth pointing out thatApex Legendsdid issue hardware banseven back in 2019, and presumably continues to do so. Some members of the community have, however, pointed out that veteran cheaters can side-step this kind of ban, meaning that neither of the two solutions on offer may be the silver bullet the community hopes them to be.

Apex Legendshas historically had issues with hackers and cheaters. In one particularly strange case, the users claimed they werehackingApex Legendsto “saveTitanfall”. It’s very likely that Respawn Entertainment will be adding more anti-cheat features in the future, and odds are that the recommendedValorantandSiegeimplementations would help to some extent.

Apex Legendsis now playable for free on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One platforms.
