What seemed just like another superhero film with 2008’sIron Manwould eventually grow into one of the most popular franchises of all time that has now resulted in 27 films and five series all in one shared universe. Now that universe seems to be growing, as a newAvengerstrilogy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe may already be developing.

The MCU has now reached its fourth phase, one filled with plenty of exciting additions that continues to expand on a cosmic level. Now, afterAvengers: Endgamemarked the culmination of the Infinity Saga as a crossover film that saw the end of many character arcs and storylines, a newAvengerstrilogy will supposedly center on theSecret Warscomic.

The rumor, according to Moth Culture’s Twitter, suggests the nextAvengerstrilogy could potentially adapt theSecret Warsstoryline. For those who are unaware,Secret Warsfeatured a wide array of characters, as seen in previousAvengersfilms, but on a much bigger scale, as heroes and villains (yes, including the X-Men) from separate universes unite for battle on a new world called Battleworld. The heroes would most likely be seen battling villains like Magneto, Dr. Doom, and the Kang the Conqueror (who was first hinted at inLokiand will appear in the upcomingAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania).

While this rumor is of course not confirmed, the storyline would make sense in terms of where the MCU is headed and how the introduction of the multiverse has been a big story element of the recent films and series. Plus, with the introduction of the Eternals as well as the original Avengers team passing the torch down to their successors (Yelena Belova taking over for Black Widow, Kate Bishop taking over for Hawkeye, Spider-Man for Iron Man, and so on), it makes perfect sense to have the new heroes gear up for their first crossover film.

As to who would be directing, a very likelychoice would be the Russo brothers, the duo behind twoCaptain Americafilms andAvengers: Infinity WarandAvengers Endgame. While they have found much success critically and of course financially with the MCU, it would also be interesting to see a different filmmaker take over and helm the new additions while also adding their distinct style to the universe.

For now though, fans will just have to see how phase four continues to unfold, as upcoming films and series likeDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,Thor: Love and Thunder,Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,Moon Knight, andSecret Invasionwill surely push the MCU in exciting directions.

All fourAvengersfilms are available to stream on Disney Plus.
