Summary
Risk of Rain 2is one of thebest roguelike games on Steamright now. It has addicting RNG mechanics, is fun to replay over and over again, and has enough variations to keep the player addicted to the game for dozens and dozens of hours.
However, it’s not perfect by any means. There is always room for improvement. The good news is that this game has a very active modding community, with hundreds ofhigh-quality mods that add new survivors, items, and enemies, or make different quality-of-life improvements.

Updated on May 26, 2025, by Huzaifa Haq:Risk of Rain 2: Seekers of the Storm is a controversial DLC, to say the least. Fans were skeptical of the DLC since Gearbox was the one making it rather than Hopoo, and the high number of game-breaking bugs at the start of the DLC didn’t help matters. Since then, Gearbox has released a patch that fixes many of the most egregious bugs and is continuing to work on minor bugs to improve the game further. Since the Seekers of the Storm DLC was released recently, many of the mods don’t work all the time, though many more have already been updated to accommodate the changes made in the new patch.
6ProperSave
Don’t Lose Progress Anymore
Having to leave halfway through a run because of real-world responsibilities is one of the worst feelings in the world, especially when the run is going supremely well. It is definitely an intentional design choice on the developer’s end to encourage players to keep playing, but when life calls, there’s nothing to do but leave.
That’s where ProperSave comes to the rescue. Whether the player isgetting tired in the middle of a runor has something important to do that can’t wait an extra 30 minutes, ProperSave will let the player save their game at the start of each stage. This way, they only need to beat the boss and progress to the next stage to save the game.

5DropinMultiplayer
Why Wait Until the End of a Run
One frustrating aspect of a game likeRisk of Rain 2is seeing a friend hop into a game, and booting it up, only to find out that they have already started a run. Completing runs can take a lot of time, and it’s not possible to join someone in the middle of their run.
DropinMultiplayer lets players do exactly that. Moreover, itgives the player a few itemsdepending on which stage they’re joining their friend. Of course, their friend friends will need this mod as well for it to work, but after setting it up once, players can rest assured that they can join their buddies without any wait the next time they’re a few minutes late to open the game.

4InstantTeleporter
Convergence Takes Too Long
Waiting for the teleporter to charge after fighting and defeating the boss can be very annoying. This isn’t a big deal in the early stages when boss fights tend to take a little bit of time, but if the player is having a good run, they’ll likely finish off the boss quite fast.
Even if the player is overpowered in the moment, all survivors are equal before the unfeeling teleporter. The game makes the player wait the whole 90 seconds regardless of how quickly they can kill the boss.Focused Convergence can reduce the waitby 50% on three stacks, but InstantTeleporter is still the better option since it lets the player charge the teleporter much faster, or even skip the charging mechanic altogether and unlock the teleporter as soon as the boss is dead.

3ShrineOfDio
Necromancy Comes With a Price
Dying is a natural part of life, and it is also a natural part ofRisk of Rain 2. There’s no shame in failing a skill check, but it stings a lot more when there’s a friend along for the ride.Seeker players can revive their teammates, but if the other person isn’t playing Seeker, then they won’t be able to revive anyone.
Dying at the start of a stage makes the player miss out on all the stage items, creating a negative feedback loop that sees them dying more and more often due to lack of proper gear. With the ShrineOfDio mod, surviving players can sacrifice some of their gold to revive teammates. If there is more than one player dead, the revived player is random. The gold cost of reviving a player scales with the stages, similar to chest pricing.
2QoLChests
Make Life Better
Risk of Rain 2is a great game, but it falls a little short when it comes to quality-of-life features. TheSurvivors of the Voidupdate has some new featuresthat rectify this issue, but there are still many possible improvements, especially to chests.
QoL currently does not highlight large utility and large health chests.
Nobody likes seeing a chest across the map, slowly making their way to it, only to find out that they had already opened it earlier. This mod makes it so that used chests fade away, clearing the visual clutter and avoiding frustrating situations like this.
1CommandQueue
The Best Artifact, Now Even Better
Without a doubt, the most powerful artifact inRisk of Rain 2isthe Artifact of Command. It removes most of the RNG from a run, letting players pick which item they want, though they can only choose from the rarity that drops from each chest. In a high-octane game likeRisk of Rain 2, there often isn’t enough time to contemplate the different choices available.
Players need to decide beforehand which items they want and select their desired options as fast as possible. However, this method is prone to human error and still leaves the player open to hits from nearby enemies. CommandQueue lets players select which items they want beforehand and spawns them according to their parameters. It makes the process much more streamlined, making it so players don’t have to stop moving every time they want to open a chest.
