Unlike other RPGs where protagonists are solely the ones doing the heavy-lifting,Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witchcranks the fantasy formula up a notch by allowing protagonist Oliver and his friends to Tame what are known as Familiars throughout the game’s world. At its core, these Familiars are not just in-game pets, but rather companions players could take in combat in order to help them defeat some of the toughest creatures in the game.

Considering how Familiars learn their own special moves called Tricks and may even evolve through Metamorphoses, it may help to understand just what the best team setups are, especially considering each protagonist’s combat style in theNi no Kunititle.
10Balancing Oliver’s Magic
Considering howOliverpositions himself as the combat mage in thegameplay of theNi no Kunigameit makes sense for him to have a team that retains balance across his specialization. TheCuttpursewould do a great deal of assistance with Oliver, courtesy of Tricks such as Smoke Bomb and Dark Cloud that could debilitate the enemy’s advance with blind and other ailments.
Meanwhile, theBighornwould excel as a tank courtesy of his taunts (Yoo-Hoo) and attack boosts (War Cry) combined with his physical prowess. Finishing this lineup is theSea Naiad, capable of dishing out large heals with Spells like Healing Tear and Rise and Shine.

9Defending Oliver’s Playthrough
When protagonistOliverembarks on his journey to save his mother in theNi no Kunigame, players need to ensure Oliver is guarded fiercely with the right companions. In terms of Familiars, theWhippersnapperis among the easiest to obtain and still boasts excellent defense.
In contrast to this defensive specialty is theSillymander, this time around flexing its high M. DEF alongside the Defend command that can make it a decent sub-tank in emergencies. Not only that, its decent attack speed allows it to outperform pesky enemies. Lastly, theOroborosremains a reliable caster for its fair share of elemental spells to complement Oliver’s own expanded arsenal.

8Consistent Combat With Oliver
Players enjoyingtheWrath of the White Witchexperiencewho want another take on a party withOlivermight want to consider pairing him with aDinoceros, immediately giving his team a dose of massive brute strength that can provide an indomitable defense. This becomes a decent Familiar to pair withIncy, which in itself is a consistent offensive combatant.
Interestingly enough, while Oliver learns a lot of healing Spells throughout the game, theFlouroborosbecomes an excellent substitute to ensure his team’s survival with its expansive healing arsenal.

7Protecting Esther At All Costs
Among the original members of Oliver’s team in theNi no Kunigame, it’sEstherthat learns how to Tame Familiars properly. And given her skill with the Harp, Esther is more of a primary support than someone who likes to remain on the front lines. In this regard, a great tank in her team would beLumberwood, being the Familiar with the highest physical defense.

Meanwhile, despite Esther’s lack of physical damagers, theHoorayserves its purpose well with decent ATK and M. ATK, coupled with Defend which can help it become another tank to protect Esther when necessary. Lastly,Sleepeafowlis a great caster to round up Esther’s team, providing durability as well as an arsenal of decently-damaging spells.
6Esther Only Needs One Familiar To Attack
If players enjoying theirNi no Kuniexperience on any platformwant to maximizeEsther’s presence in the field, they can always rely onYellow Buncherto protect her with sheer brute force. DespiteNapcapbeing the base form of its species, its further evolutions give it not just great healing but also powerful Tricks, making it yet another emergency tank.
Not only that, but attaining aSponge Bubbudalso gives Esther’s team quite a lot of healing, cementing further their durability. While this means Yellow Buncher becomes the ever-reliable damage dealer in the team, the consistent support of the rest of the Familiars can make this a decent team to work with across the game.

5Destroy Enemy Teams With Swaine’s Debuffs
Given howSwaineis practically one of the best combatants among Oliver’s companions inthe open-worldNi no Kunigame, it makes sense for players to want to maximize his aggressive potential. He can easily do this withDumbelemer, who not only has decent ATK stats but has a decent mix of Tricks to become any role in a party.
Meanwhile, the presence of theBone Rangergives Swaine’s team the opportunity to debilitate enemy teams with various status effects, courtesy of its Tricks. Lastly, theSprout Spriteis an ever-reliable counter to Bone Ranger’s casting offense, as this time around the Sprout Sprite has the best mix of healing abilities to cement the combat potential of this party.

4Capitalize On Swaine’s Combat Potential
Among Oliver’s companions in theNi no Kunigame, it’sSwainethat is perhaps the most experienced in combat, given his trade as a criminal. In turn, it’s reasonable for players to depend on him for sustainable combat performance. And with regards to Familiars that work best with him, it’s theMonoliththat works as a consistent tank throughout the game, boasting both high DEF and M. ATK that could serve well in the tricky parts of the endgame.

Accompanying Monolith isBonehead, which in itself has decent long-term potential considering how damage reduction from Psych Up can transform it into a secondary tank in emergencies. Lastly, theWispis a great choice in Swaine’s roster for someone to do elemental magics, especially since it begins with decent-damaging Fire Tricks that evolve into Dark Tricks after it evolves.
3Always Aggressive With Swaine

Lastly, should Swain want a healer on his team,Siestar Fishis the perfect choice given its arsenal of healing abilities, guaranteeing additional survivability to his squad.

2Maximize Marcassin’s Elemental Tricks
Given howMarcassinbecomes a secondary caster among the protagonists of theNi no Kunigame, he’s no slouch as a balanced mage compared to Oliver’s penchant for offensive combat. Considering this setup, a perfect tank for Marcassin could come in the form ofPottywhich, aside from its strong defense, is its capability of dishing out strong magic attacks.
Outside this tank, it’sLightshadethat becomes a good fit for a physical attacker in Marcassin’s team due to its solid stats and decent attack speed. Lastly, theTurbanditpossesses some of the higher M. ATK scores and, with its capability to learn elemental Tricks from almost any element, easily becomes capable of supplementing Marcassin’s lack of magical offense.

1Couldn’t Give Marcassin Too Much Heals
Sometimes, a caster likeMarcassincouldn’t cope with the lack of spells he has in theNi no Kunigame compared to the protagonist Oliver. However, this doesn’t mean there’s nowhere else he could shine. His roster of compatible Familiars can take him to the likes ofStrongo, which not only has a decent mix of damaging Tricks but also healing and support abilities.
Complementing the Strongo’s decent magical arsenal inthe gameplay ofWhite Witchis theKnightingale, this time adding some physical Tricks to its repertoire of support and healing abilities. Additionally, When it comes to healers, Marcassin should take advantage of howRelixxhas perhaps some of the best healing and support abilities to complement its balanced stats.
