One such idea is the creepypastas that have flared up on the internet with the video game takeover. Creepypastas, in general, are usually fictional stories that have to do with an already existing idea in the real world, such as video games. People have been writing their own creepypastas over their favorite video games for a while now, and the best ones are spine-chilling, to say the least.
10Ben Drowned
As far as early creepypastas go, Ben Drowned is one of the more famous creepypastas that began in the earliest stages of the rise of video game creepypastas. Ben Drowned is a fictional creepypasta that branches off Nintendo’sLegend of Zelda Majora’s Mask.
The game itselfis already creepy,but this story takes it a step further when someone was able to grab hold of a copy ofMajora’s Maskat a local sale. After playing though, the player notices weird glitches in the game and eventually comes across a save file with the name, BEN Drowned.
9Godzilla NES
Like most video game creepypastas out there, Godzilla NES is another fictional creepypasta that originates with an odd copy of a video game acquired in an untraditional way. This time, the video game isGodzillaon the Nintendo System.
Godzilla NEShas some odd things happening in the game, like monsters appearing in levels that haven’t even appeared before when the game originally came out. The most creepy part of the story, however, is the red monster that continuously appears and chases the player down and even looks at the player at one point.
8Lavender Town Syndrome
Among the “gods” of the creepypasta world, the Lavender Town Syndrome story hovers above as the other creepypastas certainly look up to it. Lavender Town Syndrome is a fictional story that takes place within the world ofPokemon, specifically inPokemon Red.
Lavender Town is known for its horrific music, but this story states that the Lavender Town song emitted dangerous frequencies that actually led to the suicidal deaths of children. Of course, this story is fictional, but nevertheless makes the song that much more haunting.
7Super Mario 64
Most more than likely would have guessed it: Super Mario 64 is yet another creepypasta derived from an oddly acquired copy ofSuper Mario 64.A young teen decided to purchase a copy ofSuper Mario 64after seeing it in a pop-up ad on his computer (first mistake).
After booting the game up, Mario’s face was easily distorted in horrifying ways. Next, the castle was just about completely empty, along with the paintings. There weren’t any Toads, Bowser would laugh evilly, and overall just included so many haunting details.
6Sonic.exe
Sonic.exe is among one of the more “tip of the iceberg” creepypastas out there, as many people who are into video games would have heard of the story. Sonix.exe is another creepypasta with a bootleg copy ofSonic the Hedgehog.

In this game, Sonicwasn’t able to be chosen as a character, rather there were only Tails, Knuckles,or Eggman as characters.With each character, the player would eventually be attempting to run from an evil-looking Sonic who was bleeding from the eyes — an easy creepypasta cliche — and would eventually murder the character.
5Jvk1166z.esp
If there was an award for the vaguest and curiously named creepypasta, this one may take the cake. Jvk1166z.esp was a video game creepypasta that takes place inThe Elder Scrolls: Morrowind. This creepypasta was actually a mod that players could rarely come across and download for the game. Only, the mod wouldn’t work unless played through DOSbox.
First off, every NPC that takes part in the main quest is dead, and their corpses won’t despawn. Secondly, the player will constantly lose health from acreepy figure known as the Assassin.Finally, just know to “watch the sky.”
4The Hidden Boss In Lavender Town
Pokemonis a gargantuan heap of lore just waiting to be turned into creepypastas, and there are, in fact, countless horror stories having to do with the game. There is one called Buried Alive, which also has to do withPokemon Red.Again this story takes place in Lavender Town, and more specifically within the Tower where Pokemon are buried after death.
Apparently, in a bootleg version of the game with a secret boss uncovered, there was a gruesome NPC who would fight theplayer with strong Pokemon.Upon losing, there was a game over screen rather than blacking out, and the character would be buried alive.
3Fallout 3 And The Number Station
This creepypasta is definitely one of the more hair-raising stories out there in the creepypasta world, as it has some odd truth to it.Fallout 3, like mostFalloutgames, has radio stations that players can listen in to while going about their apocalyptic day.
Apparently, if the player kills a radio host and waits to listen in to the station change into a numbers station. The numbers station dishes out some odd messages out, with numbers and Morse code. The messages range from references to the Cold War to giving future dates of events, like Britney winning an Oscar this February.
2MARIO
The MARIO creepypasta story is another piece of fanbase fiction that deals with a bootleg copy of a videogame. This time, it is a ROM hack ofSuper Mario World. Also, fun fact, this ROM hack is actually playable and fans can download it. MARIO places the player in thefamiliar world ofSuper Mario World,but it is actually empty and enemies aren’t really seen anywhere.
Not only that but there are messages in the game that imply thatMario is the villain of the story.When trying to convert a file that was mistaken, the image turned into what is seen in the image above. Uncanny and creepy.
1The Legend Of Herobrine
Ah, this may be one of the most well-known creepypastas out there, and many fans may not even know the story of Herobrine as a creepypasta, but rather a myth around the gameMinecraft.Herobrine was apparently an entity that players would have rarely come across in their survival worlds, but only for a second.
It is known to appear as Steve, but with glowing white eyes. The legend of Herobrine has reached excessive popularity to the point that even the developers ofMinecrafthave recognized it, unconfirmed it, and listed Herobrine as an easter egg in patches.
