Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warhas been talked about for weeks following the release of the game’s alpha, and a recent post on the officialCall of DutyTwitter account has made it clear why. Aside from key talking points coming from theBlack Ops Cold Waralpha’s time on the PlayStation platform and leading to plenty of discussion, the trial period also had a massive player base.
The tweet in question mentions theupcomingBlack Ops Cold Warbetawhile also sharing a specific record broken by the alpha. According to Activision, theBlack Ops Cold Waralpha was “the most downloaded PS4 alpha or beta inCall of Dutyhistory.” This is an impressive record for the alpha to break for numerous reasons, with one being how well it did despite being a surprise drop announced only a few days before its release.

TheBlack Ops Cold Waralpha performing so well on the PlayStation platform continues the recent narrative of successful test periods, asthe beta forMarvel’s Avengersalso broke recordsa few weeks back. The alpha doing so well for Activision andCall of Dutyis a good sign for both the beta and full launch of the game, as both will allow PC and Xbox players to jump into the game. The game seems poised to perform well in terms of sales, with the cross-generational nature ofBlack Ops Cold Waronly adding to its chance for success.
Still, as much as players are excited,Call of Dutyplayers are not letting theBlack Ops Cold Warskill-based matchmaking debatedie anytime soon. The tweet announcing the broken record is full of comments begging Treyarch to remove the system and add a competitive mode for fair matches instead. While some comments are praising the game and a few even defend the existence of skill-based matchmaking as it’s helpful for casual players, most experiencedCoDplayers are venting their frustration.
Whether skill-based matchmaking exists to the same extent in the beta is unclear, as aTreyarch dev recently said SBMM can be tweaked. Regardless, theBlack Ops Cold Warbeta should do very well for theCall of Dutyteams involved in the project. The intentionally overpowered snipers are confirmed to be getting a nerf before the release of the beta, and multiple new modes will be playable such as VIP Escort and Fireteam Dirty Bomb. With the former being a one-life mode and the latter featuring 10 teams of 4 players, there should certainly be some more diverse gameplay when the beta arrives.
ForCall of Dutyfans less interested in the multiplayer beta and waiting on news forWarzoneor Zombies, arecently leaked Zombie Royale modemay prove interesting. For the many players clearly interested in the series’ multiplayer component, though, they’ll get their chance to try the game once again when the beta kicks off on October 8th.
