A new leak regarding the latest iteration in the franchise may be a little disconcerting for fans however, as a reliable source has suggested that the newestCall of Dutymay be one of the series' more lackluster titles.
There isn’t much information regarding this year’sCoD, with only rumors ofa second Call ofDuty: World War 2subtitled ‘Vanguard’ floating around.Call of Duty World War 2was developed by Sledgehammer games and released in 2017, receiving mixed critical reviews and overall low-ranking scores for aCall of Dutytitle. WithCold Waralso being met with a lukewarm reception, Activision may be in the position of being carried byWarzone’sincredible popularity for another year.

The leak itself comes from Tom Henderson, a reliable leaker for games likeCall of DutyandBattlefield,who posted to his YouTube channel discussing the details ofVanguard’smultiplayer and its integration withWarzone. Among other rumors regarding the game, Henderson stated that according to his sources,Vanguard’sonline multiplayer"just isn’t going to be that great," and suggested that it wasn’t going to have many unique elements and will basically just be “Black Ops Cold War 2.0.”
Allegedly, the reason for this is that while Sledgehammer games did have a number of interesting ideas for the game, many of those features were cut “for whatever reason,” turning the game into a supposedlygenericCall of Dutytitle. Henderson points out that despite suggestions by fans that the nextCall of Dutywill be particularly impressive due to the huge number of people working on the game, Activision has actually moved its developers and studios onto developingWarzone, however, “they are not working on Vanguard.”
If what Henderson says is true, it will show a concerted effort by Activision to makeWarzoneupdates its focus for the immediate future. This is perhaps unsurprising considering the game mode’s massive success since its release, however, it will remain to be seen howCall of Duty Vanguardwill be integrated withWarzone,and whether support for main franchise titles will fall by the wayside in favor of keeping fresh updates on the table for Activision’s battle royale player base. It is certainly possible thatWarzonecan carry the entire franchise on its back for another year, but it is perhaps a worry that Activision is letting other titles slip in quality because ofCall of Duty: Warzone’spopularity.
