Inside ofCall of Duty: Warzone, Infinity Ward’s take on the battle royale genre, eagle-eyed players can spot, among a wall covered in newspaper clippings, an article’s titled “Ex-Employee Sued for Leak.” This may very well be an Easter egg referencing Activision’s many leaks, a problem whichCall of Duty: Warzonewas especially plagued by.

In February, due to frequent leaks regarding the then-upcomingWarzonebeing spread around, Activision issued a subpoena for the forum website Reddit, in order to identify one of the site’s users who postedleaked information. Since this was presumably done in order to take legal action against the user, very possibly a current or former employee, this incident seems the most likely candidate for what the newspaper may be referencing.

The lead up to the announcement ofCall of Duty:Warzonewas rocky for Activision to say the least. Extensivedetails aboutWarzone’s gameplayand capabilities, various animations, release date, menus, as well as the game’s map were all leaked and spread around social media before Activision had even offered any official acknowledgment ofWarzone’sexistence.

The nameWarzoneitself was revealed to the public through leaks, long before any announcements on the subject were made. At one point, players were even able to glitch themselves inside of the game’s menus and play on its map prior to release.

Why Infinity Ward would be making reference to these leaks andthe resulting legal action against the Reddit leakerin-game is unknown. Perhaps an employee, when designing the game’s map, simply felt the desire to make a tongue-in-cheek nod to real-life events.

However, it’s also very possible that this is all just a coincidence. Given thatthe wildly successfulWarzonehad certainly already been in production long before any leaks or subpoenas, it’s possible that the title was simply made to fill out an art asset, and sounded like something that would appear in the business section of a newspaper. If that is in fact the case, it does lend a bit of retroactive irony to the whole situation.

Regardless of why the title was chosen, and whether it’san intentional Easter egg, it’s an interesting side note nonetheless. Because whatever the reason, the whole thing now reads more like an ominous warning to the very creators of the game than it does like simple flavor text.
