Destiny 2’sSeason of Arrivalskicked off with a pyramid ship stationing itself on Io. Players are experiencing its story through the weekly “Interference” missions, whose origin was reveled in a web lore that connects past characters to current events.
Bungie publishes lore entries on its website around the start of a season to set the stage for current events, give backstory, or hint at the future. These entries can be convoluted at times but they offer great insight into the narrative and explore areas that don’t make it into the live game.

The latest lore entry, titled “False Idols,” starts out withNokris wandering the wastes of Mars. This is the first time since theDestiny 2Warmind DLC that Nokris is seen active. He was defeated in the campaign but his seeming resurrection isn’t touched upon. He could possibly have revived himself like The Fanatic, since both deal in Dark powers.

It is said that after his defeat Nokris looked to regain power but the Worm God Xol denied any connection Nokris tried to establish. Xol was disappointed with his pupil and wished to be wielded by someone more worthy. By the time Nokris tried reaching out, the Worm’s essence had fled to Io and players contacted Xol and bound him to the gunWhisper of the Wormin the secret mission “The Whisper”.
Clinging onto a piece of Worm’s husk, Nokris tries to carve his own throne world within the Ascendant Plane but is denied because of his heretical beliefs and practices. He creates a ritual site where the Guardian first met him intheWarmindcampaign. Nokris sacrifices his reanimated Thrall, capturing the attention of humanity, and baits unnamed Guardians into killing him again since they fear Nokris will raise Xol from the dead.
This final offering of death allows Nokris to shift into the Ascendant Plane. However, his cunning scheme is noticed by Savathun, Queen of the Taken, and Nokris is immediately dragged into her court. The two begin to conspire and Savathun reveals that she no longer believes in the Hive’s Sword Logic and wishes to forsake it as Nokris had done when he gave himself to necromancy.
In exchange for Nokris' necromantic knowhow, Savathun will offer the secrets of what is called the Dreaming Mind. This is more than likely Quira, Savathun’s Taken Vex Mind, responsible for thenever-ending curse of the Dreaming City. She states that Nokris will “sever the chain” between Guardians and the pyramids, muddling communication and hindering and alliance between Light and Dark.
This lore piece explains why Nokris is heard during the “Interference” missions but Savathun is said to be the one causing the dissonance. It seems like Savathun is heading a more nihilistic route, not believing in either Light or Dark and trying to mess with the relationship these two forces are in, which includesGuardians' collaboration with the Darkness. It will be interesting to see how Savathun’s story evolves leading up to her expansionThe Witch Queen.
