PopularDestinystreamer Gothalion changes his Mixer streaming plans after the streaming platform is accused of racial discrimination by a former Black employee. Mixersigned Gothalion to an exclusive dealback in October 2019, scooping the streamer away from rival platform Twitch.

On Twitter,Mixerstreamer Gothalion said that he wouldn’t be streaming “this morning” as there are “things to handle.” The streamer typically streams from 8:30AM, Monday - Friday, playing games likeDestiny 2,Sea of Thieves, and this month he has dipped his toe into Obsidian Entertainment game,Grounded. Gothalion often hosts an evening stream too but it’s unclear if that will go ahead as planned.

Gothalion’s decision not to stream this morning comes as the streaming industry has been rocked by a series of major controversies. A former employee alleged thatMixer has a racism problemand that one manager at the platform said that she sees Mixer partners as “slaves.”

Gothalion is one of several high-profile Mixer partners to have joined the site in the last year, with streamers such asNinja also leaving Twitch for Mixer, and will understandably be dismayed at this. While Gothalion’s motives for not streaming are unclear, other Mixer streamers have said that they won’t be streaming on the platform until something is done about this, while others are streaming messages of protest on the site.

The decision may have also been down to the allegations ofsexual abuse and sexual harassment facing some of the industry’s top personalities. Omeed Dariani, the former CEO of the Online Performer’s Group, is one of those accused of predatory behavior. Gothalion had been represented by OPG but it seems that this is no longer the case as the streamer’s page on the OPG site returns a 404 error. Finding new management may be one of the things that Gothalion has taken the morning off to handle.

Viewers will have their fingers crossed that the controversies rocking the streaming industry will not affect streamer schedules for too long. Reports have shown ahuge increase in streaming viewershipover the last few months as people look for things to do during COVID-19 lockdown. There’s no shortage of streamers to watch but fans will want to see popular faces like Gothalion like they’re used to.

However, these same audiences will also want these issues resolved in a positive way, making the industry safer and more inclusive of all fans and streamers. Issues such as streamers cheating atFortniteare small-fry compared to the racism and sexual harassment issues that many feel are endemic to the entertainment industry. Fixing these things is unlikely to be an overnight effort but viewers and streamers will want to see major commitment to change.
