Iconic film director John Carpenter has recently been talking about some of the games he’s been playing, specifically mentioning that he’s “hooked” onFallout 76. When it was released in 2018, the game went down asone of the most disastrous launches in recent gaming history. Even for a Bethesda title, it was riddled with bugs that broke the experience and did not feature any NPCs at all. Since then, numerous patches have improved things significantly, but to many players, it’s still not quite on par with other titles in the series.
As for the director,John Carpenter is something of a legend on the movie scene, responsible for giving the world such hits asThe Thing, which turned 40 earlier this year,They Live, and the originalHalloween. He also directed the post-apocalyptic filmEscape From L.A., which ties in with his interest in theFalloutfranchise. On top of this, his fondness for video games is well known, and a recent interview reveals just what he’s been getting to grips with lately.

When asked by The AV Club, Carpenter said he’s been keeping up with the likes ofBorderlandsandHorizon: Forbidden West, referring to the design of the latter as “mind-blowing.” However, one thing he’s really into at the moment isFallout 76, and Carpenter said he’s been “hooked for a good long time.” The director added that he’s well aware of the bugs that plagued the title when it was released, but he evidently could see past all that, referring to the game as being “fun to play.” When asked about what he finds appealing about open-world titles, the movie maker said he loves the overall freedom that games likeFalloutafford the player. He then went on to say that, despite being hooked on Bethesda’s RPG, he’s found time to playCrash Bandicootand the newRatchet and Clank.
In that same interview,John Carpenter admitted he’d been stuck onThe Last of Us 2, which led to developer Naughty Dog reaching out to him in a recent tweet to offer their help. The studio said they are “huge fans” of his work, and the company’s post on Twitter gave some hints on how he could get past the part he’s struggling with.
The director has also expressed an interest in doing amovie adaptation ofDead Space, whose Necromorph creatures were inspired by 1982’sThe Thing. The remake ofDead Spaceis due out next year, with recent gameplay footage dropping. The game overall is considered to be one of the most anticipated titles of 2023.
