Dragon Age 2has nine possible companions and players have the joy of watching them develop over the three acts within the walls of Kirkwall. Like anyDragon Agegame, the companions have their own opinions and motivations which sometimes clash with Hawke’s choices. This can result in rivalry, which, ironically, is something fans should prefer to neutrality. It turns out that when these companions are neither friends nor rivals, they tend to meet their worst fates.

There are alsocertain choices Hawke can makethat can ultimately betray these characters be it through death or slavery. Of course, the biggest choice is presented at the end of the game when Hawke has to pick a side between mages or templars. Depending on their relationships with the companions, some may break up their loyalty from Hawke and choose the opposing side.

Anders And Aveline

Anders is a companion that is the catalyst for the final battle and quest. He blows up the Chantry, causing a Right of Annulment to occur and forcing Hawke to choose a side to protect. Hawke can make the choice to kill him, and he accepts. There is also a hint that Anders may end his own life after the battle if Hawke has a complete rivalry with him and convinces him to side with the templars.

Aveline is one of the first companions in the game and is very close to the Hawke family. She is one of the few companions Hawke cannot kill no matter their choices or friendship/rivalry rank. The most negative end is if Aveline’s quest, Questioning Beliefs, was never completed and Hawke sides withthe mages. Unless Hawke manages to convince her otherwise, Aveline abandons Hawke, saying she wants nothing to do with them anymore but will not fight them.

Fenris And Isabela

While Fenris can be killed in the end game by siding with the mages without enough approval or rivalry, most fans agree that his most terrible fate can happen during his personal quest. When Danarius finally shows up, Hawke has the option to betray Fenris and give him to the magister. A letter is sent later by Danarius thatFenris' mind has been wiped againand he is a loyal slave again.

Isabela’s fate, unlike most companions, is mostly settled in the second act of the game rather than the third. Her dying also is not an option on the table. Her most tragic fate happens if Hawke gives her tothe Qunariinstead of fighting for her freedom despite the fact she came back to make things right after stealing the Tome of Koslun. If this happens, she is taken by them, and they plan to re-educate her. However, Varric does say later that he heard she escaped by jumping their ship into the sea.

Merrill And Sebastian

If Merrill is not completely loyal to Hawke, she will refuse to stay with a pro-Templar Hawke in the final battle. Later, if Hawke cannot convince her to join their side, Merrill leaves to defend theCircle Magesfrom the Right of Annulment. She gets killed in action shortly after.

Sebastian is a DLC companion and one that cannot be killed. Instead, his most tragic end is a declaration of war. No matter how loyal he is to Hawke, if they do not kill Anders, he decides to take the Starkhaven crown and send the military to attack Kirkwall. This is actually something that causes a war table mission inDragon Age: Inquisition, where the Inquisitor can either help Sebastian fight the city guard or help Aveline’s city guard push Sebastian’s soldiers back.

Varric And The Twins

Varric is an important character, as he is the one that tells Cassandra Hawke’s story and also plays a large role inDragon Age: Inquisition. Due to this, he does not really get a tragic fate. No matter Hawke’s choices, he remains loyal. As the Hawke’s siblings, they are also a special case since one always dies in the beginning and the other can possibly die in the Deep Roads after the first act.

Bethany can also die in the third act at the hands of Meredith during the Right of Annulment if Hawke chooses to side with the templars and does not defend her. Carver, in the third act, has a more merciful fate even if Hawke sides with the mages. He sides with his sibling when Meredith begins to ask for the order to kill Hawke. This makes his worst fate to be in the Deep Roads, rather than possibly in the third act like his twin sister.
