Marvel Studios just stealthily dropped a new and finalEternalstrailer that promises Chloe Zhao’s work will be like nothing ever seen before in the MCU, and it finally puts the otherworldly beings that its star-studded cast will be dealing with in the foreground.
Just likeShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,Eternalstakes on a lesser-known Marvel property created back in 1976 by Jack Kirby, for which producers have put together an enviable and immensely talented lineup that will take viewers on a history trip throughout human history. However, although the first trailer kept theEternalsshrouded in mystery, this second preview definitely starts to explain what’s going on and where were theEternalsduring the MCU’s last three phases.
RELATED:Most Powerful Marvel Characters (Who Are Not In The MCU)The trailer opens up with dialogue fromAjak (Salma Hayek), theEternals’leaderretelling the genesis event that led to the Celestials creating them and how impending world doom calls for theEternalsto assemble to prevent Earth’s destruction in less than a week. It also makes clear that part of the film will be dedicated to putting the team back together since the lack of a Deviant threat for so long allowed them to take a long break, at leastuntil Thanos intervened inInfinity WarandEndgame, and it’s all framed in Zhao’s beautiful cinematography.
Without a doubt, the biggestEternalsreveal here are the Celestials, most likely Arishem (red) and Jamiah (green), both of which are given their first full three seconds on screen that make these aliens look exactly as mighty and important as they’re supposed to be in the grand scheme of things for the MCU. It’s also clearEternalswill feature at least some form of prologue or several flashback scenes due to the team showing up in both modern and ancient events.
Unlike theEternals’first trailer that seemed more concerned with showing each character individually, this one tries to set up the story by explaining how theEternalswere prohibited from interfering in any human history events besides those related to Deviant threats, with Thanos’ genocidal snap being included among those restrictions. It’s also interesting how lines are carefully synched to the trailer, like when Thena talks about love and the camera quickly cuts to a shot of Dane Witman (Kit Harington) and Sersi (Gemma Chan), both of which will be part of a superpowered Game of Thrones sounding love triangle once Ikaris steps in (Richard Madden).
Regardless of this trailer not having asmany easter eggs as the first Eternals teaser, the added context bodes well for a film that lacks the initial hype and anticipation other superheroes can rely on any day, so maybe that mystery can be enough to get crowds to go see it in theaters.
