It’s been interesting to see how the gaming community has gravitated toFall Guys: Ultimate Knockoutsince it hit PC and PS4 last week. On one hand, players have really been getting into its chaotic gameplay where they scramble around one another to get ahead. On the other, players haveroastedFall Guysover server issuesthat have made it scramble to get around the sheer influx of people playing.

In spite of that debacle, the game has quickly become one of 2020’s most popular titles. Following its launch on August 4, players have been diving into its game-show battle royale minigames nonstop, repeatedly taking on its goofy obstacle course challenges, unlocking achievements its developers thought impossible, and findingmemorable ways to just get absolutely destroyed inFall Guys.

That’s how players feel about the game overall, but what about the critics? What have professional outlets had to say aboutFall Guys: Ultimate Knockout? Here’s what some of them had to say to give one an idea:

DualShockers(Ricky Frech)

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is a joy to play, fun for all levels of video game players, and will only get better from here…In a year full of big releases like The Last of Us Part 2 and games that are uniquely up my alley like Desperados 3, it’s hard to see anything beating out Fall Guys as my favorite game of 2020.

Score: 9.5/10

If you’re tired of battle royale shooters, then Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout might be the game for you. For fans of Mario Party minigames and TV game shows like Wipeout, this is the perfect mashup… I’m not a big battle royale person, but Fall Guys will be my battle royale of choice for a long time. With its bright visuals, thrilling gameplay, and an excellent soundtrack, Fall Guys will make its mark on the battle royale genre in a way that no other game has before. If you are looking for a party game to play with your friends this summer, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is the game for you.

Nothing else has ever paired high tension with complete silliness like this, and Fall Guys reveals we should’ve been doing it a long time ago.

Game Informer(Daniel Tack)

Fall Guys doesn’t take itself too seriously, and it’s hard not to grin after a few rounds of delightful diversion. Whether by yourself or with friends, this refreshing and ridiculous game makes every triumph and failure into a celebration.

Score: 8.75/10

Polygon(Julia Lee)

Fall Guys is a delightful bite of fun that soothes the itch for a battle royale, without forcing you to think too hard. There is a bit of a random element to the game, especially since you never know how your competitors will react to giant falling fruit or huge hammers knocking your guys around, so the ultra competitive players who just want to win at any cost may get frustrated, but don’t let that stop you. With new stages to be added in coming updates, Fall Guys is already cementing itself in the “favorites” section of my Steam library.

IGN(Simon Cardy)

A few quality of life annoyances aside, it sets itself apart from both the party and battle royale games that inspired it in its own ludicrously fun way. I may only have a handful of crowns to my name so far and can’t wait to get hold of more, but most importantly I’m looking forward to the excitement, yells, and laughs I’ll have on my way to them. Joining the frosty, war-torn Verdansk and the wild, looming cliffs of King’s Canyon is an ocean of pink slime that stretches as far as the eye can see. I know where I’d rather be.

Score: 8/10

It can be disheartening to have a game end prematurely due to uneven team matches and, worse still, when you’re forced into one of Fall Guys' unsatisfying finale modes. But neither are enough to derail the fun Fall Guys consistently generates, with its chaotic obstacle courses and earworm soundtrack ensuring you’ll be coming back for more.

Score: 7/10

There is a very promising kernel at the core of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. With some more game mode variety, some basic controller and accessibility options, and a stable player base, I could see it being a great alternative to other live-service games. It just isn’t quite there yet.

Score: 6/10

So yeah, even the harshest critics of the game so far see the potential the game has to really shake up the battle royale genre. Already,Fall Guyshas proven that battle royale games don’t need to be shooters, and just likeFortnite, it shows that, for all the popularity of serious, gritty, and oftentimes mature games, a game can go all in on being silly and still be a hit.

With the game off to such a great start, it’s safe to say that it will only get bigger from here. Publisher Devolver Digital hasn’t opened up yet on what plans it may have for the game’s future, but odds are those will include more minigames and cosmetic items being added down the line. What’s more, developer Mediatonic has expressed interest in collaborations with other game franchises, as well as potentiallybringingFall Guysto other systems like Switch and Xbox.
