Fallout 4is not exactly off the rails, but many would agree that it’s not completely realistic either, so a new mod has emerged which grounds the opening moments in more realism. AlthoughFallout 5has been confirmed, the fact that it’s coming afterStarfieldand the elusiveElder Scrolls 6means the next entry in the post-apocalyptic franchise is a long way off. But in the meantime, fans can always go back to the current and previous entries.

WhileFallout 4was praised when it launched in 2015, some may feel that the series has deviated significantly from its late 90s roots. However, it does feature one of thebest Bethesda step-out momentsin the guise of a seemingly wholesome family life torn apart by nuclear war. Players begin in their idyllic home with their loving partner and newborn son, Shaun. However, the threat of incoming atomic bombs sends the protagonist and their surrounding neighbors fleeing for a nearby underground vault, mere moments before the sky is filled with a terrifying mushroom cloud.

It’s a notable introduction, but one person felt it needed a dose of realism. As spotted by PC Gamer, Nexus Mods user Unreal Septim has released “More Realistic Intro,” a mod forFallout 4that tweaks the opening sequence. Essentially, once players start a new game, the beginning will play out as normal. However, within a few minutes, just as the newscaster makes the announcement about the incoming nuclear threat, the bombs go off before anyone has a chance to get to Vault 111, obliterating Sanctuary Hills and all who inhabit it, including the player. And then the game ends.

It’s a pretty interesting mod, even if it means that the game only lasts for about five minutes.Vaults are one ofFallout’s most famous assets, and most fans probably take it for granted that their character will be one of the few remaining survivors in a devastated world. However, Unreal Septim ensures that players don’t even get to see the inside of one of these safe dwellings, which some would say makes the game a little bit more realistic, if brief.

There are plenty ofmods forFallout 4that make for a better survival experience, but “More Realistic Intro” seems to do the opposite by ensuring the total annihilation of everyone right at the start. It means players don’t get to fully take on the role of the Sole Survivor, which is an ironic name anyway with this mod installed.

Fallout 4is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions in development.
