On the first anniversary ofFinal Fantasy 16, game director Hiroshi Takai released a message to assure players that the game’s upcoming PC version remains in development. Released as a PS5 exclusive title on June 21, 2025,Final Fantasy 16is the latest entry in the mainlineFinal Fantasyseries. Produced byFinal Fantasy 14leader Naoki Yoshida and developed by Creative Studio 3,Final Fantasy 16is also the first numbered entry to earn a Mature rating from the ESRB and similar entities. Six months after its release,Final Fantasy 16launched the first of two expansions,Echoes of the Fallen. This was followed up byThe Rising Tidein April 2024. Though the expansions also marked the end of major development onFF16, that has not stopped Square Enix fromreleasing updates to address bugsand implement customization options based on player feedback.
AlthoughFinal Fantasy 16remains a PS5-exclusive game, that may soon change. In a social media post to commemorateFinal Fantasy 16’s first anniversary, Takai thanked fans for playing the game and its two expansions. Takai reassured players thatFinal Fantasy 16’s PC port remained in active development at Creative Studio 3. In a previous update, Yoshida said thatFinal Fantasy 16’s PC port was in the final stages of optimization, and confirmed that PC players would need a solid-state drive (SSD) to play the game. In his anniversary message, Takai added that Creative Studio 3 would like to seeFinal Fantasy 16on as many platforms as possible, and asked fans to pay attention to future updates.

In May, Square Enix revealed its plans to double down on developing its best-selling franchises, includingFinal Fantasy, andfocus on multi-platform releasesfor as many projects as possible. This plan was in response to the company’s declining sales, which dropped nearly 70% from one fiscal year to another. Whether Takai’s message means that Square Enix is considering an Xbox Series X/S port ofFinal Fantasy 16or not remains to be seen.
Between the PC port of Final Fantasy 16, and theupcoming launch ofFinal Fantasy 14: Dawntrail, Creative Studio 3 has a busy schedule ahead. Only time will tell when more fans will experienceFinal Fantasy 16outside the PS5.
