However, the game has been received well by those living in Japan just as much – if not more – than from players and industry members in the West. To put it into perspective,Ghost of Tsushimasold out in Japanless than a week after the game launched, something that rarely happens in the industry in modern times. Now, the game has achieved an even more impressive milestone in Japan.
According to independent video game industry analyst Benji-Sales,Tsushimahas achieved the 2ndhighest lifetime sales of any PS4 first-party game in Japan after only three weeks. In a recent post on Twitter Benji-Sales said, “#1 isSpider-Man, however at roughly 300k physical sales [Ghost of Tsushima] isn’t far behind and will surpass it in the coming weeks. Amazing results.” The game easily madePlayStation’s top selling PS4 games of July, withTsushimareportedly selling a massive 2.4 million copies only three days after its launch.
Those either living in Japan or with some degree of expertise of Japan and Japanese history have come out to praiseTsushimasince its launch. Recently, aJapanese professor discussedTsushimain a YouTube video, giving insight into the game’s historical accuracy and context to the game’s setting.Ghost of Tsushimadoes an amazing job of detailing the beauty of Japan while also staying faithful to the customs and history of feudal Japan. Thought the game is not strictly historically accurate, it is still very grounded reality.
Even members of the video game industry in Japan have come out to praiseGhost of Tsushima. In fact, thedirector of theYakuzaseries praisedTsushimavery highly in a recent interview saying something along the lines that Japan was beaten by the Western studio Sucker Punch in terms of how they lovingly crafted the world ofTsushima. That’s extremely high praise coming from the director of a Japanese game series whose games literally take place in modern day Japanese cities. Needless to say, Japanese gamers are head over heels forGhost of Tsushima.
