Summary

Somewhat of a phenomenon when it first came out, the originalHadesis widely considered to be one of, if not the best Indie game of 2020. The firstHadeswas a perfect storm of excellent game design, featuring an incredibly vibrant art style, anaddictive roguelike gameplay loop, some great character designs, and excellent voice performances.Hadesmanaged to capture lightning in a bottle, and though it’ll be extremely difficult to replicate its success,Hades 2is going to give it a good go.

Announced atlast year’s Game Awards,Hades 2appears to be a direct sequel to its 2020 predecessor, carrying over some of the original’s core themes, but giving them a fresh context. InHades 2, players control Melinoe, the daughter of Persephone, and potentially Hades or Zeus, as she attempts to find and defeat Chronos, the Titan father of the gods who’s just escaped from his cell in the underworld. Along the way, Melinoe will meet a variety of mythological characters, and while most will be new for the sequel, there are a few returning faces.

Every Returning Character In Hades 2 Confirmed So Far

Despite being announced back in December 2022, and allegedly entering early access later this year, not a lot of information has been given aboutHades 2yet. Fans are still going off the one trailer shown during the Game Awards. Thankfully, this trailer, despite being brief, does reveal quite a bit about the game’s main story and some of the characters Melinoe will find on her journey, some of which will be all too familiar to fans of the firstHades.

The central plot ofHades 2seems, much like the first game, to revolve around the titular god of the underworld. However, rather than trying to escape from his prison herself, Melinoe is seemingly tasked with breaking Hades out of jail, with hisTitan father Chronoschaining him up. It’s currently unclear just how prominent Hades' role in the sequel will be, but he’s one of the few returning characters confirmed forHades 2so far.

Another returning character confirmed forHades 2is theleader of Olympus himself, Zeus. Much like the first game, Zeus will offer a variety of Boons for the player-character inHades 2, likely all themed around the god’s lightning powers once again. With Zeus having led the war against his father Chronos, the one which resulted in the latter’s eternal imprisonment, he’ll likely play quite a major role in the sequel’s story, aiding Melinoe in any way he can to ensure that Chronos does not escape Tartarus and storm Mount Olympus.

Hades and Zeus are currently the only returning characters confirmed to appear inHades 2, though fans can probably expect to see a good few more in the final game. With the entirety of Olympus threatened by Chronos' rampage, it only makes sense that they’d all return to help Melinoe defeat the Titan. So while it hasn’t been confirmed yet, and this is all pure speculation, it would make sense if fans saw the likes of Poseidon, Hermes, Athena, Artemis, Ares, and Aphrodite in the sequel, all offering a new set of Boons each that play up the gods' unique abilities. There’s even a popular fan theory going around that claimsZagreus will play a major role in the sequel, running the underworld in his father’s stead, though again, this is just speculation at this point. Regardless of rumors, fans can probably expect to see plenty of new and returning mythological characters inHades 2.
