Hell’s Paradise: Jigokurakumade its debut in the Spring 2023 anime season,based on a manga that ran inShonen Jump+. The series follows a group of criminals on death row that are sent to a mysterious island to find a rumored elixir of life that grants immortality. Each criminal inHell’s Paradise: Jigokurakuis paired with an executioner from the Asaemon family, who will kill them if they act out of line.
The criminals serve as some of the major characters inHell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku, including the main character Gabimaru. The most important criminals are incredibly strong and have unique talents that help them serve the dangers of the island. Here are the strongest criminals inHell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku.
5Nurugai
The young Nurugai islikely the most innocent of the many criminalsthat were sent to the island. Having been raised in a community that rejected the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Nurugai was imprisoned when she accidentally led samurai to her home village, leading to its destruction. Though she was kept alive to hunt down similar villages, an Asaemon took pity on her and suggested she join the expedition for a chance to be pardoned.

Nurugai is an amateur fighter who has great agility and survival skills, but little else. With the help of the Asaemon executioner Shion, Nurugai slowly improves in swords as the story goes on. She also gains the ability to use Tao, though it is initially difficult for her due to having trouble believing that the power exists. Ultimately, Nurugai’s abilities are below those of the other criminals who are seasoned warriors, but she is nevertheless one of the few to survive the many perils of the island.
4Gantetsusai Tamiya
The massive swordsman Gantetsusai is a big, boisterous man who is always looking for a strong opponent to fight. Initially a renowned warrior known as the Blade Dragon, he was sentenced to death when he destroyed the gate of a daimyo he used to work for. This event showcases both his arrogant personality and incredible strength.
Gantetsusai’s most prominent feature is his massive body, which is also quite strong and durable. He can lift an adult man with a single hand and withstand powerful attacks without flinching.He is a powerful swordsman, and with his massive blade he has cut down massive monsters with a single swing. Gantetsusai is quite skilled and precise with his blade, able to hit even small targets without much difficulty. Among the criminals and executioners, Gantetsusai is the slowest to learn to utilize Tao, though he eventually manages to do so during an intense battle.
3Yuzuriha
The beautiful and seductive Yuzuriha is more dangerous than she looks.A ninja like Gabimaru, Yuzuriha was imprisoned for raiding Sagiwa castle on her own. While she seems friendly and outgoing on the surface, she is in truth a selfish and conniving woman who always works to make sure she benefits the most from any given agreement or situation.
As a kunoichi, Yuzuriha uses a variety of ninja techniques to keep herself alive on the island. Her main technique uses her bodily fluids to create a mucus that she can cut and whip with to attack enemies. She can drink potions to change the properties of her mucus, such as making it poisonous. Yuzuriha is also the only one among the criminals and executioners that had prior knowledge of Tao, the strange mystical power mastered by the denizens of the island. Yuzuriha ends up teaching Tao to the others once the power becomes common knowledge.
2Chobei Aza
Chobei is easily the most villainous of the criminals taking part in the hunt. A ruthless, violent man who cares for little aside from his brother Toma, Chobei was known as the Bandit King that terrorized local villages before being caught and imprisoned. Toma became an Asaemon in order to free his brother, but instead informed Chobei of the elixir of life, which Chobei took interest in.

Chobei’s life as a bandit gave him strength and endurance far above that of a normal human, allowing him to fight off the island’s monsters with ease. He can wield any weapon easily, though he generally prefers to use swords. His true strength, however,lies in his intelligence, which he has used to control subordinates and devise plans during battle. Chobei is one of a few human characters to attain not only Tao, but also Flower Tao, giving him the ability to regenerate damage to his body and even transform into a monstrous form that can use vines as tendrils.
1Gabimaru
Gabimaru was once the greatest ninja in Iwagakure, but he was betrayed by his fellow ninja because of his growing sentimentality. Sentenced to death despite being seemingly unkillable, Gabimaru was given the chance to receive a pardon by retrieving the elixir of life from the mysterious island. Desperate to return to his beloved wife, Gabimaru is willing to do whatever it takes to survive.
Gabimaru’s intense training has afforded him incredible superhuman abilities, including immense strength and endurance. He can also perform superhuman feats like dislocating various joints, stopping his heart, and surviving several methods of execution. In combat, Gabimaru relies on hand-to-hand martial arts and ninjutsu. He eventually learns to use Tao and Flower Tao, giving him supernatural abilities on top of his already incredible skillset. Gabimaru’s most valuable ability, however, is his intelligence and experience. He can quickly analyze any dangerous situation and discern the best plan of action. Gabimaru is the most powerful of the criminals sent on the expedition to search for the elixir, and easily the most driven.
