Guerrilla Games, the studio behind critically-acclaimed PlayStation first-party video game series such asKillzoneandHorizon,has just announced a major milestone for theHorizonseries. Founded in 2003, Guerrilla Games has been credited for its utilization of PlayStation hardware to create games with amazing visuals using its signature Decima game engine that is also being used by other developers likeKojima Productions with itsDeath Strandingseries.Guerrilla Games departed from the first-person shooter seriesKillzoneand releasedHorizon Zero Dawnin 2017. The series follows the story of Aloy, a tribal huntress who lives in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by machines. Since its release,Horizon Zero Dawnreceived an expansion and the studio released two other games in the series;Horizon Forbidden WestandHorizon Call of the Mountain. The studio shared online that theHorizonseries has sold 32.7 million copies, with the sequelHorizon Forbidden Westselling over 8.4 million units. The studio also included that millions more have discoveredHorizon Forbidden Westthrough PlayStation Plus subscription servicesand Play at Home.
Fans of Guerrilla Games congratulated the studio on its success in the replies with many of them already anticipating aHorizon 3announcement and other possible spin-off titles for the series. Others questioned if theKillzoneseries would make a return, but it seems like Guerrilla Games has shifted focus toHorizonfor the foreseeable future given the massive success of the series as well asleaks of an unannouncedHorizonmultiplayer projectthat may be currently in development.
Regardless of what is currently in development, Guerrilla Games definitely seems to have hit its stride as a studio with theHorizonseries and Decima engine. It is impressive to see the studio’s growth over the past 20 years, while crossing huge milestones it never imagined possible.
