Summary

When it comes to the latest 2D venture that isSonic Superstars, there’s quite a lot about the game that had fans excited before launch. It may have had quite a lot of weight on its shoulders as the first2D game sinceSonic Mania, but the fact that Tails, Knuckles, and even Amy were playable was a great surprise, and the fact thatSonic Superstarswould support 4-player couch co-op was even better.

Thankfully, just like all the other Classic Sonic games that came before it, playing co-op is optional, and everything inSonic Superstarscan be beaten as a single-player experience. However, as the name of the game emphasizes its colorful cast as a unit, naturally the story and core revolves around friendship and teamwork. This may tie in rather well with the co-op feature, but Superstars goes the extra mile to make sure this theme is felt in the single-player experience by making sure to shine a spotlight on every character in equal measure in multiple ways.

Single Player Sonic Superstars Fans Won’t Be Going Solo

Sonic Superstarshas a main campaign in the form of Story Mode, which sees players tackle 11 stages with their own acts to complete. While players are making their way through the slopes, perspective jumps and enemies, they may be in for a surprise if they keep an eye on the background. Occasionally, one of the other playable characters will be making their way to their own location, and even one act contains a surprise visit fromTrip the Sungazer.

It’s a nice touch to the game that keeps the overall story very consistent in the end, as according to the lore, Sonic and his friends worked together to save the Northstar Islands from Dr. Eggman and Fang the Hunter. This is reflected in the many different character endings, which change based on who the player defeats the final boss with, as a good number of Sonic’s friends appear in each of the different animated cutscenes. These little background segments also only happen based on the character fans are playing as, so Knuckles players will see Tails and Sonic beating robots in one act, and Sonic players will find Knuckles at the start of one ofSonic Superstars' shorter stages.

Sonic Superstars' Character Acts Round Out the Roster

Titles such as the 2D ClassicSonicgames usually make players choose a character for an entire playthrough and see the adventure through them until the end. With a world map and the option to go between it after every stage, however,Sonic Superstarsallows fans to play as the entire castwhenever they desire. It makes it easy for any obstacles players may run into possibly made easier as one character could either fly over the part they dislike or possibly find another route with a different character’s ability. LaterSonic Superstarschallenges do lock players into one character, but by that time, fans should have taken the time to practice each character beforehand.

Sonic Superstars' stagesalso have one more trick up their sleeve to encourage players to experience everything Sonic and his group of friends have to offer as Story Mode features brand-new “character acts.” These levels, in particular, once selected, automatically switch players to the character the stage is assigned to, and players have to play through the act as them. Later challenges change this up a bit, but it serves as a great excuse to play as a new character to experience what their play style is like. These acts are also optional, as fans can easily pick the next stage when prompted, but as Special Stage rings are scattered throughout them, and Amy’s serves as a very important piece toSonic Superstars' story, there are plenty of rewards for trying out someone new.

Sonic Superstarsis available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
