UPDATE 12/19: New sales information has revealed Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart was profitable for Insomniac. In addition, the leaked data was reportedly from before the launch of the game’s PC port.

Original story follows.

Summary

WhileRatchet and Clank: Rift Apartwas met with much critical praise when it launched on the PS5 back in 2021, the recently leaked Insomniac documents have revealed that it ultimately failed to break even in sales. The developer behind hit PlayStation franchises likeRatchet and ClankandMarvel’s Spider-Manwas recently thevictim of a massive ransomware attack, and the group responsible has since started leaking the information stolen across the internet.

Included in this wave of leaks are Insomniac’s plans for the future, including the next five projects the studio is working on. There was a great deal of information about the upcomingMarvel’s Wolverine, such as the supposed actor playing the famous Canadian mutant and how Insomniac will supposedly use it as a springboard fora PlayStation-exclusiveX-Mengameto go along withSpider-Man 3and a long-rumoredVenomspin-off. Outside of the Marvel-related Insomniac leaks, it was also revealed that a brand-newRatchet and Clankgame could be coming in 2029.

Ratchet and Clank together

Unfortunately, it seems that the previousRatchet and Clankmight not have performed as well as Insomniac had hoped. Among the documents leaked in therecent Insomniac data breachwas a chart of budgets and sales figures for the last few Insomniac-developed games. According to this chart,Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apartsold 2.2 million units worldwide, with $73 million in revenue. Sadly, this falls short of breaking even with the game’s supposed $81 million budget - making it a loss for Insomniac by roughly $8 million.

On a lighter note, it appears thatInsomniac’s Marvel-based offerings made a decent profitfor the studio, at least according to the chart included in the recent ransomware leak. 2020’sSpider-Man: Miles Moralesreportedly made a total profit of $104 million, while the subsequentMarvel’s Spider-Man Remasteredmade about $11 million in profit. Meanwhile, this year’sSpider-Man 2has already broken even after making a roughly $75 million profit. Of course, this information comes from a dubious hacker leak, so it should all be met with a healthy dose of skepticism until more concrete evidence comes forward.

If the data presented in the recent Insomniac ransomware leak is accurate, thenRatchet and Clank: Rift Apartfailed to make back its reported $81 million budget, making it a financial loss for the acclaimed PlayStation developer. There are many possible factors for this poor financial performance, such asRift Apartbeing released exclusively for the PlayStation 5 at a time when the system was difficult to come by. In any case, it appears thatRatchet and Clank: Rift Apart’s glowing response from fans and critics alike wasn’t enough to help it break even following its 2021 launch, at least according to the sales figure leaks brought on by this week’s data breach.
