Ever since David Ayer did confirm that a director’s cut ofSuicide Squaddoes in fact exist somewhere out there, fans have been demanding and begging for it to be released for streaming. Now, Jared Leto, who played the Joker inSuicide Squad, has made another push for the release of the Ayer cut.
Ayer himself over the years has been advocating for his cut ofSuicide Squadto be available to the public and loyal fans. Ayer previously stated, “I put my life intoSuicide Squad. I made something amazing. My cut is intricate and an emotional journey with some bad people who are shit on and discarded (a theme that resonates with my soul)."

“The studio cut is not my movie,” Ayer said at the time, confident that his cut of the film is profound and beaming. His passion for the creation of the film that he wanted to make would feel somewhat meaningless if it remains forever unseen. Fans, however, aren’t the only ones rushing to demand that Ayer’s cut is released. Leto, who recently recounted hisexperience playing the Joker inSuicide Squad, toldVariety,“Absolutely! Why not? Why wouldn’t they? I mean, that’s what streaming is for right?” Leto makes a strong point, calling out streaming platforms for not honoring their value of accessibility.
Ayer took to Twitter to agree and second Leto’s statement. He tweeted, “Exactly what streaming is for. If you own IP and you have a mandate to monetize it from your shareholders that’s exactly what you do.” Ayer even went as far as to tag Warner Bros. parent company, ATT in his post. The fact that is really confusing about Warner Bros.' refusal to release the Ayer Cut is that this is not the first time a director has asked for the same.
Zack Snyder’sJustice Leaguewas made available through streaming on HBO Max after years of fans lobbying for the director’s cut. With fans' advocacy and support for the director’s cut ofJustice League, it too was finally released for streaming. So the possibility that one day fans will see Ayer’s director’s cut ofSuicide Squadis not out of the question at all.
Yet, it does open up the question as to why Snyder’s cut ofJustice Leaguehas already made it onto streaming platforms, especially sinceSuicide Squadwas released before the theatrical cut ofJustice League. With huge stars like Jared Leto andMargot Robbie pushing for the releaseof Ayer’s director’s cut, its fateful release seems inevitable at some point.
