When the firstDoomgame came out in 1993, id Software founders John Carmack andJohn Romeroprobably did not realize just how much an impact it would have on the gaming world. Both the original game, andDoom 2, have been landmark titles in kickstarting the FPS genre. One of the things that has kept the older games going for so long is mods, like theDoom 2add-on which is made entirely out of post-in notes. So many decades later, and fans are still building additional content for the original classics. One of those people is Romero himself.
Speaking in an interview recently, the ex-id Software programmerwas asked about any new projects that were currently being worked on. Taking a second to think about it, John Romero told Bridgeburner that he has been making some “cool” maps forSigil 2, an upcoming mod forDoom 2. While it’s a long interview, the part aboutSigil 2can be found at around the 42:11 mark.

When asked about a possible release date, Romero suggested that it wouldn’t be coming out soon. He also said that this is a mod forDoom 2specifically, and not the originalDoom, which the firstSigilmod was made for and has been labelled as an unofficial fifth episode to the game.Romero has always been supportive of the modding community, believing that modders should be “rewarded” for their work, adding that if game companies reward programmers and designers, why shouldn’t people in the community be treated the same.
Even though the reboot ofDoom, and the subsequentDoom Eternal, are seen in such high regard and proof that the franchise is far from dead, many continue to return to the original games. These are typically given a ton of love from fans and modders so John Romero talking aboutSigil 2is likely to draw some attention. While it’s usually the fan base that tends to put out the majority of the custom maps, it’s not unusual for big companies to do the same. Recently,Bethesda also released some new add-ons for the originalDoomgames.
The fact that John Romero himself is working on the mod is exciting enough for most fans. The chance to see more content from the original creator shows that he is just as keen to return to the original games as the fans are. With hisunofficialDoommod being released in 2019, fans hope that his latest addition will be just as popular and help keep the love for his and Carmack’s creation going for even longer.
Sigil 2is being worked on forDoom 2, but no release date has been announced yet.
