Megumin’s Greatest Inspiration
Young Megumin gets a front-row seat to arguably one of the most epic opening scenes in anime history (or at least,as far asKonoSubais concerned), as a curvacious cloaked figure performs a truly sensational display of Explosion magic. After singlehandedly defeating the dragon with this truly remarkable feat of nature, the gorgeous heroine approaches and offers to grant the girl a wish, in gratitude (assumedly) for inadvertently breaking the barrier around the Crimson Demon Village, leading to the elven-looking Arch Wizard’s success. Megumin proceeds to spew out an absurd array of impossible requests, including world domination, turning into a Demon King, a breast enlargement, or help with retrieving her missing puzzle pieces.

Eventually, the pair seem to agree on a fair trade-off. Megumin wants the mysterious mage to teach her that spectacular spell so that she too can wieldthe strongest magic in existence, which should ultimately aid her in world domination. The woman standing before her is undoubtedly the coolest person Megumin has ever met (and viewers all know how much the Crimson Demon Clan covet coolness!)
“the intense heat and brightness of the flames left a lasting impression on her heart.”

Some attentivefans may have picked upthat this is not the mystical Wizard’s first appearance in this series, asWolbachwas (un)fortunate enough to share a hot spring experience with Kazuma in Season 2’s penultimate episode ofGod’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!
Megumin’s Unadoring Critics
Determined to follow the destructive path of becomingan Explosion magic aficionado,Megumin wastes no time in enrolling at the Red Prison (the Crimson Demon Clan’s eloquently named chuunibyou Academy) to hone her skills. Unfortunately for the ambitious mage-in-training, her aspirations are not met with a warm welcome, as those around her astonishingly consider Explosion magic to be a “joke.” Pucchin does not elaborate his reasoning too thoroughly, merely stating that one is unlikely to use such a spell in their lifetime (suggesting that there is no need for such intense fire-power in a seemingly peaceful society.)

The rest of the girls in the class laugh along, convinced by the absurdity of Megumin’s goal, besides Yunyun, who appears to have unwavering admiration for her self-declared arch-nemesis. As it turns out, the most crucial component of combat apparently has very little to do with offensive abilities and is entirelybased on how “cool” they lookon the battlefield. Delivering a spectacular pose and an impressionable introductory one-liner could be the deciding factor between success and failure; actual power potential takes the back seat!
Megumin Perseveres with Her Passion
Fortunately, Megumin is not fazed in the slightest by the coldhearted responses bombarding her from all sides. She has already declared her classmates to be meager stepping stones, and, as everyone knows, “a lion doesn’t concern himselfwith theopinionsof thesheep.“Megumin doesn’t plan on putting any energy into cultivating friendships or proving her worth to the narrow-minded Professors; refining her Explosion magic skills is the top priority here!
Furthermore, she is completely unperturbed by Yunyun’s declaration of war, proving that she is still the same Megumin thatKonoSubafans have adored for years,as she has evidently maintained that ferocious, self-assured attitude since her early childhood years. That being said, she does feign a sickness during that all-important PE posing practice session, giving the chief’s daughter the much-needed opportunity to team up with Arue, subsequently granting Yunyun a better chance of success. Unfortunately, Megumin’s confidence doesn’t help with classwork, as she finds herself demotivated with learning the compulsory yet trivial advanced magic, which doesn’t recognize explosive capabilities as a valid qualification.
