Minecraftreleased fully in 2011, and its distinctly simplistic block-based world and visual design became a revolution in an era of gaming when every AAA game was pushing for more and more graphical fidelity. It is due to this distinct art style thatMinecrafthas not become dated visually like many other games from 2011.Minecraft’s simple but incredibly deep mechanics have also managed to keep the game incredibly popular for over a decade.
Minecraft’s visual style has been used to create many incredible in-game builds. But one thing many fans often wonder, is how the game’s blocky visuals would translate into a more realistic art style.

Minecraftcontains many enemy creatures which are mostly cubic recreations of recognizable creatures and monsters, but the game’s blocky visuals take the edge of what could be incredibly creepy designs. But now a Reddit user named Roman Khramov has created a diorama which translates some of these monster designs, along with the player character, Steve, into a more realistic visual style. Roman’s diorama shows Steve attacking one ofMinecraft’s spider-riding skeletons, with realistically stylized designs that show off many creepy details that are lost inMinecraft’s blocky visuals.
The diorama conveys details that will be recognizable toMinecraftplayers, although they may have only seen them before inMinecraft’s iconic in-game art style, such as the flowers on the ground, or the diamond pickaxe wielded by Steve. But Roman Khramov’s diorama also adds many details that could never be depicted inMinecraft’s blocky visuals, such as the individual blades of grass, or the creepy hairs applied to the spider’s body.Fans have created realistic versions ofMinecraftbefore, but to depict the game’s art style in an intricate real-life diorama is truly impressive.
The most impressive aspect of Roman Khramov’s diorama is how they have managed to maintain the blocky element fromMinecraft’s in-game designs while building upon the many details that are only implied by the in-game models, such as Steve’s goatee, or the spider’s drooling mouth. Khramov’s skeleton model is also reminiscent of the famous skeleton models from the 1963 film,Jason and the Argonauts, which were brought to life bythe legendary stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen. Viewing Roman Khramov’s previous Reddit posts reveals that they are an extremely talented diorama maker with a knack for horror inspired designs.
Minecraft’s simplistic visuals do not stop the game from often holding a very oppressive and scary atmosphere, especially when the player is deep underground. The lonely atmosphere of single-playerMinecrafthas not been lost on many players, and there have been manymods made which turnMinecraftinto a full horror game.
Minecraftis available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One as well as legacy platforms.
