Summary
A recent Naughty Dog job listing hints towards anotherUnchartedgame being in development. Interestingly, there hasn’t been any update on the series’ continuation sinceUncharted: The Lost Legacyreleased in 2017.
Unchartedfollowed the stories of Nathan Drake, who is the main protagonist in four major titles in the series. The games have also been a commercial success for both Naughty Dog and PlayStation, and have managed to set a standard in the industry for great narrative design and storytelling. However, despite attaining success across the board, Naughty Dog hasn’t detailed any plans to continue the series afterNathan Drake’s story ended withUncharted 4. Although, that might be on the verge of changing as a recent job listing has suggested that the series could be making a comeback.

This comes via a job listing for a Physics Programmer on Naughty Dog’s careers page, which has an interesting description that requires the candidate to work with “drive-able physics-based vehicles, cloth or rope simulation.” There are some instances of rope climbing and swinging inThe Last of Us Part 2as well, but using ropes and driving are inherentlyUnchartedmechanics, which could be an indication towards the franchise’s revival.
At the moment, this is purely speculative considering the studio’s co-president, Neil Druckmann, said thatNaughty Dog was done with theUnchartedseries. However, it could’ve been possible that Druckmann was talking about closing the curtain on Nathan Drake’s story and not the whole franchise. Additionally, the studio has all the incentive to continue the series considering theUnchartedmovie adaptation released in 2022 was quite successful, and its producer has already provided a promising update for a sequel. The series has also been influential in the gaming and entertainment industries, where movies likeMission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1andExtraction 2have scenes that are visibly inspired by the set piece sequences fromUncharted 2: Among Thieves.
Another reason why the revival of theUnchartedcould be true is becauseNaughty Dog is currently working on multiple AAA gamesat the moment. Out of these, the only game confirmed so far is theLast of Usmultiplayer title. A recent rumor claimed that Naughty Dog is working on two multiplayer games instead of one, and another one also suggested that it is making a sci-fi game.
