Big Mom is one of the former Four Emperors of the Sea in the world ofOne Piece. Introduced in the story quite early, Big Mom has become an integral part of the post-time skip journey of the Straw Hat Pirates. Ever since Fishman Island, Big Mom has been extremely relevant to the overarching plot ofOne Piece, challenging Luffy early on and then eventually clashing with him later on. She has appeared across multiple arcs and remains to be one ofOne Piece’svery best villains.

Of course, asan Emperor of the Sea, Big Mom possesses tremendous strength, a testament to which is her 4.388 billion berries bounty. Big Mom is truly a monstrous fighter who has several unique powers up her sleeve. In herfight against Trafalgar Law and Eustass Captain Kid, she unleashed a completely new power that she named Misery. This power, while rarely used by her, is the epitome of her Devil Fruit ability, offensively, at the very least.
Big Mom’s Soru Soru no Mi Power
The vast majority of Big Mom’s powers stem fromher Devil Fruit, called the Soru Soru no Mi. This Devil Fruit is a Paramecia type of power that allows Big Mom to manipulate souls at will. It gives her complete control over all souls in existence, however, the degree to which she can manipulate them varies. For instance, Big Mom can rip out anyone’s soul who fears her even in the slightest and then manipulate that soul as she wills. She can give these souls to inanimate objects and turn them into Homies or, she can give them to living things as well, such as trees, among other things. Big Mom can also take these souls and store them within herself, which makes her even stronger.
One of her strongest abilities is called Soul Pocus, and this power lets her instantly kill anyone who fears the Emperor of the Sea or even hesitates in front of her. This power of Big Mom makes her worthy of holding the title of Emperor of the Sea. Big Mom can also give souls to objects or things within her own body such as her bones.
Doing this allows her to heal from any damage that she’s sustained as the bones become capable of fixing themselves. Big Mom can also sacrifice her own lifespan and, in exchange, gain a tremendous boost in power. All these things combined make her a powerhouse. If all that wasn’t enough, Big Mom can also use her own soul to create powerful Homies and these Homies are very special when compared to the others.
Big Mom’s Special Homies
So far inOne Piece, Big Mom has used her own soul to create Homies on four occasions. She is known to have created the Homie Prometheus, Zeus, and Napoleon using her own soul. These Homies are special and possess much more power when compared to other Homies seen in the story. They also have absolute authority over other Homies as they are made by her own soul. It is highly likely that the very first homie that Big Mom created was Prometheus, the fire homie. Prometheus is just like a miniature version of the sun that Big Mom can manipulate freely. Using its powers, Big Mom gains access to the fiery hot flames of the sun. Prometheus is incredibly difficult to defeat andnot even Haki-based attacks workon it since it doesn’t have a tangible body.

Similarly, Zeus is a thundercloud that Big Mom gave her own soul to, and using its powers, she can manipulate thunderstorms and lightning at will. In Wano, Big Mom replaced Zeus with Hera and her powers seem to be much more potent than Zeus. Finally, Big Mom has also given her hat called Napoleon, which he can also turn into a sword, her own soul. Napoleon is an extremely powerful weapon that she uses in combat all the time.
In Wano, Big Mom displayed the ability to combine all three of her Homies for the very first time. When fused, they form what is known as Maser Saber. This Maser Saber is incredibly powerful and can slice through nearly anything in existence. Maser Cannon was powerful enough to rip a hole through Ulti in a single go. Meanwhile, Maser Saber posed all sorts of problems against Trafalgar Law and Eustass Kid. It is through this Maser Saber that Big Mom gives rise to one of her ultimate weapons and that is Misery.
The Power Of Big Mom’s Misery
Misery is manifested when Big Mom combines all her special homies together. It is through the Maser Saber that misery is born and she takes the form of a giant woman capable of manipulating both lightning and fire at the same time. Misery can either electrocute her targets and burn them to a crisp from the inside with electricity, paralyzing them at the same time, or she can use extremely hot flames to incinerate her targets and reduce them to ash. The power of Misery is immense. Fans recently got a glimpse ofBig Mom using it against Trafalgar Law and Eustass Kidin the anime. Misery was able to absolutely demolish Kid in combat.
Even though Kid is extremely skilled in fighting, evident from his high bounty, he didn’t stand much of a chance against Misery. Both her lightning and fire powers make her a force to be reckoned with and when Big Mom is in absolute control, there is nothing that can stop Misery from destroying all her enemies.
Misery’s Connection To Mother Carmel
Eagle-eyedOne Piecefans will immediately have noticed that Big Mom’s Misery has a deeper meaning than just being a powerful attack. While this technique is, by all means, extremely overpowered and allows Big Mom to destroy the vast majority of her enemies, Misery is much more than that and it also potentially opens a window for a deeper dive into Big Mom’s past. Misery is clearly based on Mother Carmel, who was a very important figure in Big Mom’s life. When Big Mom was abandoned by her parents, it was Carmel who took her in and decided to raise her. Of course, Mother Carmel had ulterior motives as she was a child trafficker and wanted to sell Big Mom to the Navy.
However, Big Mom did not know that. In fact, Misery, along with everything from her ideals to her dream in life actually stems from Mother Carmel. While Big Mom ate her on her 6th birthday, she doesn’t recall this incident. To her, Mother Carmel simply vanished one day and to this day, she is seeking answers as to what happened in the past. Big Mom’s strongest technique 3,000 Leagues in Search of Mother is a nod at that and suggests that even now, Big Mom is searching for answers as to what happened to her beloved Mother Carmel back in the past. That is precisely why Big Mom gave tribute to Carmel with Misery, giving it the exact same appearance and, making it her strongest attack at the same time.
While Big Mom has now been defeated, there is a possibility for her to return in the future of the story. If she does, perhaps, Oda will dive deeper into her past and help her resolve the issues that she hasn’t found an answer to for all these years.
