When the first Generation ofPokemonoriginally released, there were only 151 pocket monsters for trainers to go after. While there are over 900 catchable creatures now, the originals stuck with a lot of gamers who were introduced to thePokemonseries with Generation 1. These pocket monsters have stayed popular for over two decades as they remained in the minds of earlyPokemonadopters.
This love for theoriginal 151 Pokemonhas led to some interesting projects. Gamers have been using their imaginations to create awesome works revolving around the creatures, including one who has decided to begin a unique undertaking in renaming the Pokedex in its entirety, starting with the pocket monsters inPokemon Red and Blue.

A Redditor known as Evilkenevil77 has started a project to give allPokemonscientific names. The user has begun by posting the names of the first Generation and aims to do all the pocket monsters. Titles that were on the list included Dinorana Bulbus for Bulbasaur, Magnafelis Deus for Mew, and Mutatiovulpis Turpis for Eevee. This is a massive and intriguing undertaking that Evilkenevil77 is going after, and it will be interesting to see the names of future regions as they continue on.
Evilkenevil77 explained how the naming will work for future Generations.Baby Pokemonwill have “Infans” at the end of their names, while all legendaries will have “Deus” at the ends of their titles. Those with regional variants will have “var.” along with a region in addition to their names to show there is more than one form of that Pokemon. Evilkenevil77 stated that the Latin titles are going to be odd in some places as they are not aiming for a perfect translation of the language. Regardless, it is fun seeing what the user came up with for the initial 151 pocket monsters.
Evilkenevil77’s project has already gained a good number of fans as their post currently sits at over 4,000 upvotes. Many commenters stated that they love the effort that Evilkenevil77 is putting into the naming, while a few mentioned how nerdy the list is and how much they love it. One user said that they knew Latin and that they were able to identify many of the Pokemon that were posted. Another Redditor brought up the fact that they are a biologist and that they could identify real life genera, and would love for Evilkenevil77 to give an explanation on the choice of the creature’s names and the etiology that was used. The project already has a strong fan base despite this only being the first part, which will hopefully help motivate Evilkenevil77 to push on and rename theentire Pokedex.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violetwill release on November 18 for the Nintendo Switch.
