Such was the case with Reddit user Great__Jaggi who took to the Pokemon subreddit to share their story of becoming a league champion with a single Butterfree. According to Great__Jaggi, they weren’t a huge fan of the new Pokemon featured inPokemon Moon, so they “ditched” theirstarter Rowletas soon as possible and picked up a level 3 Butterfree on Route 1. The quest across the Alola region took their Butterfree all the way to level 90.

If that weren’t enough, Great__Jaggi also placed one more restriction on their battles: noZ-moves, determining early on that they were overpowered. Other players were quick to point out the attacks that Butterfree had available to it by the end of the game: Psychic, Toxic, Air Slash, and Bug Buzz. While these attacks aren’t shabby, players pointed out that this particular Butterfree lacks many of the moves that have been proven to be excellent for high-level battles, like Sleep Powder or Substitute.

Great__Jaggi further explained that while Butterfree hasn’t been a part of their main team since the days ofPokemon Yellow, this win will make them part of their Dream Team going forward. With that in mind, playing the game this way was anything but easy. Great__Jaggi noted that theirfight with Oliviawas the hardest of the Eite Four battles, but they also reported difficulties with the Salazzle Island Trial and Rock-types, in general.

Crafting a carefully balanced and opportunistic Pokemon team is in every player’s best interest, but some players enjoy inventing new challenges for themselves. Every newPokemongame brings something new to the table, but players keep revisiting older titles with new ideas in mind, too. Whether it’s beatingPokemongames controlled by a Twitch audience, clearing the game with a single Pokemon, or trying aPokemon challenge run, these games can keep players occupied for years on end even after they’ve exhausted all of the available content.
