Several PlayStation 5 users have reported that the console has a bug with its ability to download and queue games and apps. Whenever a user sets a game or app to download, it remains in the downloading queue forever. At the moment, the bug seemingly only affects games and apps with a specific PlayStation 5 version. A few examples of the games and apps the bug affects includeSpider-Man: Miles Morales,Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and even Disney Plus.

When the bug does occur, it appears in two ways. The first shows that thePlayStation 5game/app in question is in the queue and downloading. However, the download’s progress bar stays at zero and never moves. The second version just causes a download error to appear. Both versions tell the player to check their Downloads menu, which will have nothing in it, meaning they can’t fix the problem in the usual fashion.

The PlayStation communityhas discovered a fix for the bug, but most won’t like it. Apparently, the only known way to get rid of the problem is for users to reset their PlayStation 5’s back to factory settings. As one might suspect, this returns the PlayStation console to how it was when it first came out of the box, meaning everything on it will be completely wiped. As such, it’s highly recommended that players back up any data they specifically have on the console to an external hard drive or the PS Plus cloud service.

The newPS5 UImakes getting to the factory reset option fairly easy. All players need to do is follow these steps:

Once the factory reset goes through and the PlayStation 5 console boots back up, all of the games and apps it had trouble downloading before should do so correctly when prompted.

Resetting something back to its factory settings is usually a last resort to fix whatever has corrupted the machine, so it’s a shame that PlayStation 5 users have to resort to it over a simple bug. Still, it’s also somewhat expected. New consoles like the PlayStation 5 typically go through growing pains on release. Some users have even reported that thePS5’s Rest Modedoesn’t work properly.

It’ll take some time for Sony to figure out everything wrong with thePlayStation 5 and release a firmware updateto fix it. When it does, players shouldn’t need to worry about using a last-ditch effort to fix a bug.
