A local radio station played a Simlish version of Natasha Bedingfield’s “Pocketful of Sunshine” on the air recently. Simlish versions of hit pop songs are incredibly common, as fans ofThe Simsuse Simlish speech mods to remix their favorite music. Those Simlish remixes tend to only go so far as YouTube, though, whereThe Simsfans can laugh about it together. The songs aren’t typically taken seriously, let alone played live on the air of a radio station.
As background. “Pocketful of Sunshine” is a song from English singer-songwriter Natasha Bedingfield that was released in 2008. It reached number 5 on Billboard’s Pop and Hot 100 charts and was one of Billboard’s top 20 songs for the year. Which is to say, in 2008 “Pocketful of Sunshine” was a very successful song. It just so happens thatThe Sims 2was also very popular at the time, and manyThe Simsfans joked that Pocketful of Sunshine sounded like it was sung in Simlish. Naturally, a fan decided to remix the son in Simlish for comparison, which has been published on YouTube for the past 14 years.

How the Simlish version of “Pocketful of Sunshine” ended up being played on a localpop radio stationin 2022 isn’t clear, but it does appear to have happened. Reddit user Sarah-tonin-def shared a video on TheSims subreddit showing the song playing on the radio while they were driving. Their dashboard showed the station as 95.9 FM, though the name of the station itself isn’t clear. It could be KISS FM out of Green Bay, Wisconsin, the “Number 1 Hit Music Station,” running down the day’s Top 40.
What’s funny about the situation is that it’s possible onlyThe Simsfansnoticed what happened. Other people listening to the radio may not have noticed at all, since the Simlish version of Pocketful of Sunshine sounds very close to the original. Others may have noticed the audio sounded garbled and may have thought it was an issue with the radio station, or worse: that they were having audial hallucinations.
There are two reasonable-sounding reasons for why a Simlish version of “Pocketful of Sunshine” was played on a local radio station. The first is that it was an honest mistake, with whoever handling the music simply selecting the wrong version of the song. The second, and more likely possibility, is that someone knew exactly what they were doing and thought it would be completely hilarious.
With luck, the joke goes unnoticed, or it’s appreciated for what it is and no fans ofThe Simsget in trouble at the radio station. Or, even better, more radio stations start playing garbledSimlish versions of pop songsmore regularly; Paramore’s “Pressure” is particularly good. The Simsfans will hopefully help make it happen.
