Despite being released in 2017, it seems thatNier: Automatamay still have a few secrets to be found. The action-RPG from PlatinumGames features a good deal of futuristic hacking and slashing mixed in with an existential plot that requires a player to pay attention in order to achieve all the endingsNier: Automatahas. Recently, theNier: Automataonline community believed it had stumbled on one last secret from the game developers as a player managed to find a previously unnoticed door in the game.

A video posted by Twitter user Lance McDonald took the internet by storm when it showed asecret room withinNier: Automata’sCopied City. The player, currently in control of A2, enters the small room, in which there is a ladder. Taking the ladder down, the player then sees a long hallway, leading to some spires. Just to tease the fan base, the video ends just as the player begins to run down the hallway.

Another video showed what was at the end of the hallway, withNier: Automata’ssecondary protagonist 9Sbeing the character viewers see this time around. 9S appeared to enter a new location which players had dubbed the Church. With all this excitement around a new area in the game, fans immediately began theory crafting on what the reason behind the existence of this church. However, it appears that the area is not an official one after all, and was created by someNier: Automatamodders to show off a new set of tools that will allow the community to make their own new environments like the Church.

A stream on a modding group’s Twitch channel, known as ze34_zinnia, showed more footage of the secret room and the Church before explaining that it was “never meant to blow up this big.” The modding team appears to consist of three users. DevolasRevenge designed the map, Woeful_Wolf created the blender tools, and RaiderB developed the scripting tools. All of these addons and scripting tools will be available to players soon according to a message provided by the team. This isn’t the first timeNier: Automatahas seen mods, but it is one of the most ambitious alterations to be made to the game since launch.

Even while it will certainly be interesting to see what theNier: Automatacommunity will come up with thanks to these modding tools, some will be disappointed that the secret room didn’t turn out to be something else. Theories had been made all over the internet, stating that the Church was a nod toNier: Replicant, or that new DLC or even adirect sequel toNier: Automatacould be on the way.

Nier: Automatais available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and will be released for Nintendo Switch on October 6.
