Summary

AnElder Scrolls 5: Skyrimplayer has shared how they found themselves surprised by a guard in a very unusual and dangerous place. The post is amusing fellow fans, who are more accustomed to this kind of behavior from guards inThe Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivionthan its younger counterpartSkyrim.

One of the majorchanges betweenSkyrimandOblivionis the behavior of guards and how the player’s bounty works. InOblivion, guards might pop up to arrest players for a bounty far from where they established it, but inSkyrim, bounties are based on region. If a player gets far enough away from the Hold where they secured the bounty, it’s usually enough for guards to leave them alone until they find themselves back in that same territory.

That wasn’t the case for a player known as darragh73, though, as they found themselves suddenly pulled into a conversation with a guard while inCastle Volkihar. As seen in the image, the guard is attempting to arrest the player, with the player having the option to pay their fine of 1000 gold, go to prison, or resist arrest. It’s a pretty ordinary interaction that most players have likely seen many times, except that it’s happening in the middle of a vampire den that would pose a threat to many players, let alone a random guard.

Fellow players were very amused at this encounter, and were curious about how it transpired. Darragh73 explained that they were most likely followed on foot, as they were unable to fast travel due to having aggro from guards. The concept of the guard chasing after them on foot and eventually across water is striking fans as particularly funny. Some suggested that the guard had a prior career as a courier, who are renowned for finding players just about anywhere in the game, or that he was still an adventurer who hadn’t yet taken anarrow to the knee.

While a negative outcome would be likely for any NPC unwittingly wading into a vampire den, some in the comments sympathized with the guard, even stating that they would have allowed their character to be arrested out of respect for his efforts. In darragh73’s case, though, the guard’s efforts were for naught, as the player simply let theaggressiveSkyrimvampiresin the area attack the guard shortly after the screenshot, destroying him with fireballs and lightning attacks.
