With a game as big asSkyrim, there’s a lot that can end up happening that was never intended to. Open worldgames tend to have a significant number of bugsand quirks causing weird moments, even in a game that’s been out for more than a decade.

Even after all this time, some players still find themselves puzzled when something goes awry inSkyrim. Such was the case when one player found their Dragonborn had lost their head and kept walking around.

Reddit user BlazeronReddit took to the site to share the odd experience with fellowSkyrimplayers. A simple screenshot shows the Dragonborn standing, looking completely normal with the exception of the lack of head on their shoulders. BlazeronReddit noted that their character had been decapitated, but kept walking around without their head and they didn’t know how to fix it. As it turns out, this isn’t an unheard of bug, though it is certainly one of the stranger and more amusing ones to occur.

Skyrimon PC allows users to enter codes that make it possible to do things like teleport to different areas, access secret rooms used as dead NPC storage, orturn on noclip. Another possibility is turning on godmode or no damage cheats, which eliminate all damage to the player. However, no damage cheats don’t eliminate the possibility of an auto-kill strike coming from an NPC. In other words, what happened here is the player was using a cheat that protected their Dragonborn from damage to their HP, but not from the physical injury itself. After the decapitating blow, their Dragonborn still had health, so the game didn’t register it as a game over and allowed them to keep playing.

While the player seemed disturbed by this discovery, other players in the comments were quite amused by it. Some shared stories of similar things happening to their own Dragonborn, including the horrifying discovery that their decapitated head was following them wherever they went, rolling around on the ground. Others referenced Ragnar the Red, whosesong is crooned by bards throughoutSkyrim, telling the tale of him losing his head.

Unfortunately for the player, the easiest way to fix this is to reboot the game to a prior save. Saving frequently in a game likeSkyrimis a must, so with any luck, they won’t lose much progress. In any case, this particular odd incident should serve as a reminder to other players of the risks that can come with tinkering withSkyrim’s console commandsand cheats.

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrimis available now for PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
