During EVO 2022, SNK made a surprise announcement and confirmed that a newFatal Furyfighting game was in development. Little information about the newFatal Furyproject was shared other than a teaser image hinting at three of the game’s main characters. While no officialSNKannouncements have been made since,Fatal Furychief producer Yasuyuki Oda attended Gamescom 2022 and let slip some exciting new details.One of the biggest surprises ofFatal Fury’s initial announcement was the lack of staple franchise characters being announced. Instead, the three characters teased inFatal Fury’s reveal were best known fromGarou: Mark of the Wolves, including Rock Howard and two figures believed to be Kain R. Heinlein and Billy Kane. Now one majorFatal Furycharacter can be added to the known roster. Oda says that the newFatal Furygame will focus on online play and vs. fighting. That may not be a surprise, considering what modern fighting games focus on, but for a franchise being resurrected after more than two decades, it’s important to set expectations early. Fans ofFatal Fury’s single-player storiescan rest easy, too, as Oda says there will be a bigger focus on story inFatal Furycompared to other modern SNK games.
Focuses on online multiplayer, competitive fighting, and single-player may sound like SNK is just saying it will focus on everything. That may seem like lip service, but Oda says that the truth is that thenewFatal Furygameis simply a “very big release.” That’s going to be necessary to reintroduceFatal Furyto a new generation of fighting game fans.
Creating such a big game also comes with some negative consequences, too. Oda admits that it will be some time before SNK shows much of substance aboutFatal Furybecause there’s a lot of work left to be done.
Fatal Furyfans will simply have to be patient. More information will be shared about the new game when it’s ready, and clearly the developers at SNK are anxious to talk about the game as soon as they can. The confirmation ofTerry Bogardis exciting for the time being, as is confirmation that the game will focus on both online and story action.
