SeveralDestiny 2players have become disillusioned with the game and are considering not playing the upcomingThe Final Shapeexpansion because of it. As possible factor could be the frustrating server bugs anddifficulty spikes in the recentSeason of the Deepchapter.

Destiny 2has been well-received since its 2017 launch and has received regular updates since then. Each new chapter includes new maps, equipment, limited-time events, and of course, a continuation of the story. The latest chapter is this year’sLightfall, with the follow-up,The Final Shape, due out in 2024 to close out the current saga. Bungie has stated that there are plans for a new saga to come along soon after that, but it seems some players might not be on board and may be ready to throw the towel in.

One notable example is Reddit user OmegaXVI_Prime, who asked their fellowDestinyfans if they were planning to stick toDestiny 2until the very end. One of the more notable replies came from Obersword, who felt bored by the repetitive nature of each new chapter’s gameplay loop and admitted that they only tune in for new story beats. While stating that they would likely playThe Final Shapeif only for its plot elements, they hoped Bungie would putDestiny 2to rest afterward, vowing to only watch the cutscenes of future chapters on YouTube if the developer decided not to.

Others in the replies were in agreement with this take, citing the many hours and dollars they’ve sunk intoDestiny 2DLC, prompting a desire to save their money and free up some time for other things. A few even admitted that they’d become burnt out at an earlier point and had taken a similar approach withthe story of theLightfallcampaign. Other users speculated as to why the story is continuing afterThe Final Shape, suggesting that it’s mainly because players keep throwing money at the game.

It is unclear if this segment of the player base represents the majority, but it’s clear that Bungie is not backing down onDestiny 2any time soon. Of course, continuing a game for this long is not unprecedented, withgames likeWorld of WarcraftandMinecraftstill putting out patches and DLC a decade or more after their release. Only time will tell how longDestiny 2will keep its narrative going.

Destiny 2is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
