Summary
Sonic X Shadow Generationshead Takashi Iizuka recently shared more information about the upcoming remaster’s story and how the new Shadow-centric content will tie into the original game. Back in January, Sega announced an updated version ofSonic Generations, a 2011 anniversary title that remixed levels from across the franchise in honor of the titular hedgehog’s 20th birthday.Sonic X Shadow Generationswon’t just be the old game with a new coat of paint though, as there will also be additional levels centered around Sonic’s famous arch-rival Shadow the Hedgehog.
This new bonus campaign, appropriately titled “Shadow Generations,” will seemingly take the self-proclaimed Ultimate Lifeform on a journey across some of his most infamous moments in theSonicfranchise. From what has been shown so far inpreviousSonic X Shadow Generationspreviews, players will get to re-experience Shadow’s battle against the Biolizard from the end ofSonic Adventure 2, run through the ruined Space Colony Ark that stands at the core of his troubled backstory, and even come face-to-face with the sinister Black Doom from the 2005Shadow the Hedgehogspin-off.

In a recent interview with Famitsu (viaSonic Stadium),Sonic X Shadow Generationsproducers Takashi Iizuka and Shun Nakamura shed some insight into how the newShadow Generationslevels will be connected to Sonic’s own trip down memory lane in the original game. According to Iizuka, the Time Eater (the monster that served as the primary villain and final boss ofSonic Generations) will create the White Space that Shadow finds himself trapped within. As shown in pastSonic X Shadow Generationsgameplay trailers, this White Space resembles theopen-world hub introduced in 2022’sSonic Frontiers.
Shadow Will Confront His Tragic Past in Sonic X Shadow Generations
Takashi Iizuka also reiterated thatSonic X Shadow Generations’ new content will be more story-focused than the original game, with Shadow confronting the demons of his past while trying to escape the White Space. Iizuka notes thatShadow has a more tragic backstorythan otherSoniccharacters, and his goal with “Shadow Generations” is to convey Shadow’s allure by including said backstory along with characters like Black Doom - who is shown to be taunting Shadow as he navigates through his dark memories inSonic X Shadow Generations.
Black Doom won’t be the only enemy Shadow encounters in the new story content, as the game’s official Japanese gaming website recentlyhinted at another playable character inSonic X Shadow Generations. Some of the potential candidates include Metal Sonic and Eclipse the Darkling from the ArchieSonic the Hedgehogcomics. Shadow will also gain some powerful new abilities whenSonic X Shadow Generationslaunches this October as part of 2024’s Year of Shadow event.
