In an interview withGamesRadar+, Lord and Miller explained why they chose tochangeSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. “There was an international version that was made almost two months before the movie came out because it had to be translated into different languages and these French censors have to decide what the rating of the movie is in Europe,” Miller said. “The team at [Sony Pictures] Imageworks still had some shots that they felt they could do better for the finished version. So, they cleaned up and tweaked those things.”

Miller also mentioned thatSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Versecrewmembers helped explain what changes to make. “Certain crew members – people in the sound department or on the animation team – were like, ‘Oh, could we do this instead?’” Miller explains. “Let’s do the best possible version we can. Because it’s a multiverse movie, it’s like there’s a multiverse of the movie – that was really the reasoning behind it. It was trying to make the best possible version that everyone was going to be the proudest of.” Lord also said, “I think most of the changes are improvements.”

Most changes between theSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verseversions are minor. For example, when Miguel asks Lyla for backup, she points in one version and takes a selfie in another. These small changes don’t change the viewer’s experience too much, but some of the changes in the digital version are much bigger, including an important aspect of ascene with Gwen Stacyand Miles. These bigger changes have upset fans because they prefer the original version, and there is currently no other way to watch the different versions.

Although some fans enjoy the changes because it makes it feel like ‘there’s a multiverse of the movie,’ it would be a shame if the otherSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verseversions become lost media. Fans will have to wait and see what versions will be available on streaming or the physical release.
