Square Enix’s recent shareholder meeting had aXenogearsfan ask if it would be possible to see a remaster of the cult classic RPG. In recent years,Square Enix has been putting out plenty of remaster collections. Alongside remasters, there have also been remakes of cult classics such asStar Ocean: The Second Story RandLive A Live. One RPG that hasn’t had a remaster or port in a long time, however, is another cult classic,Xenogears.
For those unaware,Xenogearsis a sci-fi RPG that was first proposed asFinal Fantasy 7before it got retooled into its own thing. It was such a departure from conventional RPGs at that point in time that it didn’t sell as well as the aforementionedFF7. Despite that, it was still highly regarded by fans and critics. There’s still demand for anything regardingXenogears, as evident by one Square Enix shareholder.

During a recentSquare Enixshareholders meeting, shareholders were able to ask Square Enix staff members questions, includingFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthproducer Yoshinori Kitase and Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu. One question was pointing out the success that theFinal Fantasy 1-6 Pixel Remasterseries has seen, asking if there are any plans to remaster other past titles, with the shareholder mentioningXenogearsspecifically. In no certain terms, the president replies that he is refraining from sharing any information about new games, but states that they are considering various options in the company. He also asks that they look forward to any future announcements.
This answer was very non-definitive, giving no direct answer to the shareholder’s question. It wasn’t likely the inquiry would have been answered in a shareholder meeting either. Despite that, there is at least some demand for aXenogearsport, with fans hoping that since Square Enix has been doing plenty of remakes and remasters, thecult classic RPGwill get its own one day.
WhileXenogearswouldn’t get a direct sequel, its director, Tetsuya Takahashi, would find success in spiritual successor seriesXenosagaand eventually theXenoblade Chroniclesseries published by Nintendo. Some hope that ifXenogearswere to get a remaster, then the original director and Monolith Soft would be involved in remaking or remastering the game.
