Starfieldfeatures manycompanions that players can have in their crew.The Constellation companions are important to the main story, have the most to say, and are romance-able characters. These companions also have high moral standards and will dislike the player’s actions if they step outside the bounds of the law. Gamers who are looking to play as a thief or pirate should keep them far away when committing certain actions.
This leaves an empty slot for a worthy companion. Mathis is a pirate in the notorious Crimson Fleet that can be hired into the crew. Players will meet him after completing the “Rook Meets King” quest and getting deep into the undercover storyline. Follow this guide to get a pirate aboard the ship inStarfield.

Side With Mathis During Echoes of the Past
The first mission Delgado gives the player is “Echoes of the Past.” Head down to The Lock with him to find tracesof the Crimson Fleetfounder’s lost legacy. Mathis will also be along for the ride. At a certain point the prison will experience a collapse and the player will be cut off from the group with Mathis.
Mathis will offer an opportunity to the player. He suggests rounding up all the loot and then killing the Crimson Fleet leader Delgado. Do not completely shut him down and consider the offer. Explore the old prison and find Kryx’s legacy in his jail cell. Towards the end of this mission, Delgado will speak over an intercom.The most important choice to get friendly with Mathis is by telling Delgado that he was a huge help and the reason the mission was a success.Mathis will thank the player character for the credit and decide not to turn on Delgado. After returning to the Key he will be at the Last Nova Bar. However, he will not be recruitable yet.
Side With the Crimson Fleet
Continue on through the undercover quest-line and choose to hand the Legacy over to Delgado during the"Eye of the Storm.“This is the end of working undercover where players need to choose betweenSysdef or the Crimson Fleet.Giving the Legacy to Delgado will side with the Fleet and lead to a large space battle with the UC Vigilance. Finish up and Mathis will be in the command quarters near Delgado ready to join the player on their adventures.
