PlayStation’s July 18, 2025 State of Play stream brought with it many major announcements and reveals, chief amongst them being the release date trailer forCapcom’s upcoming remake ofResident Evil 4. Other hot-ticket Sony-exclusives such asThe Callisto ProtocolandHorizon Call of the Mountainshared the spotlight, but smaller indie and AA projects didn’t go without mention. Among the most exciting is perhaps Roll7 and Private Division’sRollerdrome, a title that melds the mayhem of aTony Hawkgame with the chaos of a fast-paced third-person shooter.
The roughly minute-longRollerdromereveal trailer shows off a stark comic book aesthetic that brings to mind titles like the 2019 Humble Bundle-published hitVoid Bastardsor, more aptly, the cult classic Sega Dreamcast gameJet Set Radio. Mixing the frenetic flow of roller-skating with shooting that appears to require deadeye accuracy,Rollerdromewill be a standout onPlayStationplatforms.

Developed by the team behind theskateboarding-themedOlliOlligames,Rollderdromeis poised for a mid-August release, meaning that fans won’t have to wait more than a few months to get their hands on it. Slated to debut on both PS4 and PS5, the game is technically a Sony exclusive on console, though it will also be available on PC. What’s more,Rollerdromewill seemingly be a timed exclusive for at least six months; some fine print in the trailer’s closing moments indicates that Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch ports could come around after mid-February of next year.
Private Division is a subsidiary of Take-Two, the publisher of the similarly-stylisticBorderlandsseries, which focuses on the publication of indie titles. In 2020,Private Divison acquired three prominent indie studios, bringing Roll7 into the fold alongsideOri and the Blind Forestdeveloper Moon Games andArmellodeveloper League of Geeks. These acquisitions serve as an indication of how far indie gaming has come over the past decade; in the early 2010s, Roll7 was self-publishing overlooked games likeZombie Pop!andGets To The Exit. Today, the studio is working with major publishers on console-exclusive titles.
Coincidentally, fans of the odd niche of gamingRollerdromeoccupies may have more to look forward to in 2022. While nothing is set in stone, Sega is reportedly working onnew entries in theCrazy TaxiandJet Set Radioseries, meaning that roller skating-centric titles could swiftly become the next major trend in indie gaming.
