Those themes are all embodied in the riddle used by the teacher for their riddle of the week. In a post to Reddit, u/dpen22 posted an image of a whiteboard that had the quote, “What gets bigger the more you take from it?” For fans who have completedGod of War: Ragnarok, this is aheart-wrenching riddle asked by Brokbut is not answered until the post-game.
During the narrative ofGod of War Ragnarok, Brok asks Kratos and Mimir a riddle that Mimir struggles to answer initially. Unfortunately, Brok never gets to confirm the answer for Mimir as he is abruptly murdered byOdin who has been disguised as Tyr, the Norse God of War, the entire time. After the game is completed, there is an optional favor in which players attend the funeral of Brok, and Mimir finally gets the answer to the riddle, “a hole.”
The answer is possibly a double entendre because it had been explained previously by Sindri to Atreus that Brok had died before but that Sindri retrieved his soul. However, Sindri was unable to fully retrieve his soul and only managed to retrieve three-fourths of it. Brok learns of this revelation during his visit with Kratos to forge the final weapon Kratos receives duringGod of War Ragnarok. The answer to the riddle can also be interpreted asthe hole left in Sindri’s heartafter the death of his brother.
The riddle itself is an excellent example of the quality of writing inGod of War Ragnarokand how it connects the themes of the narrative throughout the game, even in the optional content. Fellow Redditors grieved Brok in the comments and shared their love for Raeb’s Lament, the song played during the funeral.
God of War Ragnarokis out now for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
