Bundled alongside other Magic Weapons that cost Mana, Wands inTerrariatake the form of both rods and staves that give players access to long-ranged attacks with different effects, allowing their mages to dish out damage from afar without the risk of getting hurt up close.

However, while some of the best Wand offerings inTerrariaare located in Hardmode, many magic staves in the game are capable of helping wizards get through threats with ease. Depending on the Wand of choice, players should be able to go beyond typical ranged attacks and have other effects, such as illumination and burning enemies on fire. Just which pre-Hardmode Wands are must-picks for players?
10Sapphire Staff
The accessibility of crafting materials in aTerrariagameplay session can make theSapphire Staffone of the easier staves to make in the game. However, its lack of autofire and middling 19 Damage transforms the Sapphire Staff into the weakest member of these gemstone-themed staves.
Thankfully, the Sapphire Staff’s lack of combat versatility is compensated with its ease of crafting. It can be created through an accessible Iron or Lead Anvil with 10 x Silver Bar and 8 x Sapphire. Although the Sapphire Staff is a decent weapon, players should upgrade before facingbosses like the Golem.

9Emerald Staff
Players who want to add a bit of green in theirTerrariagameplay as spellcastersmay consider using theEmerald Staff. Its pure green aesthetic gives it a nature-leaning quality, although it deals Magic Damage. The Emerald Staff can be crafted in an Iron or Lead Anvil through 8 x Emerald and 10 x Tungsten Bar. When used, the Emerald Staff can dish out 19 Damage in continuous autofire, making it the weakest among auto-firing Gem Staves.
Unlike other Gem Staves, the Emerald Staff has a rather slow projectile, though this means it has the opportunity to hit enemies twice. Its one-time pierce makes the Emerald Staff quite efficient in taking out mobs.

8Thunder Zapper
Enjoyers ofTerrariagameplay who want to add a bit more styleto their wizards could appreciate the steampunk appeal of theThunder Zapper. After acquiring it through Sandstone Chests (Underground Desert) or Fishing for Oasis Crates (Oasis), players can enjoy the zig-zag zipping-zapping effect of its Thunder Zapper projectile.
The Thunder Zapper might have a rather middling 20 Damage, but its fast-moving projectile isn’t affected by gravity and can’t shoot vertically. Its high-enough damage can make it a neat replacement for a Gem Staff like the Amber/Ruby, although its lack of piercing can make it an impractical weapon against hordes of opponents.

7Ruby Staff
In terms of appearance alone, theRuby Staffcan give mages quite the “Wise Old Figure” aesthetic, especially when paired with the right robes. It even has a similarly-pretty Ruby Bolt projectile that can pierce through one opponent.

Stats-wise, the Ruby Staff is tied with the Amber Staff as the second-strongest weapon among the Gem Staves, falling behind a few damage points to the Diamond Staff. Players can create the Ruby Staffvia a Crafting Stationwith 10 x Gold Bar and 8 x Ruby through an Iron or Lead Anvil.
6Amber Staff
Like its Gem Staff brethren, theAmber Staffis a craftable weapon in a player’sTerrariaexperience. This Gem Staff needs 15 x Sturdy Fosil and 8 x Amber, making it the only item of its type to need Sturdy Fossils instead of the usual metal bars. Interestingly enough, the Amber Staff functions almost identically to the Ruby Staff, except Amber Bolts have an inherent light quality that illuminates the far corner of the room.
As with other Gem Staves, the Amber Staff can also autofire provided players have enough Mana. Its 21 Damage and ability to pierce through one opponent makes the Amber Staff an emergency staff against somebosses like Duke Fishron, especially for fans who can’t yet access the Diamond Staff and other higher-tier weapons.

5Diamond Staff
Among the seven Gem Staves in a player’sTerrariaexperience, theDiamond Staffis perhaps the strongest in base power. Crafted with 10 x Platinum Bar and 8 x Diamond through an Iron or Lead Anvil, this staff is easily one of the best staves players can acquire through resource-gathering before theyventure into Hardmode.
Like its Gem Staff comrades, the Diamond Staff’s Diamond Bolts can pass through sloped blocks, specifically their slanted side. Otherwise, the Diamond Staff has no special effects except for its decent 23 Damage, making it a straightforward attacking weapon.

4Aqua Scepter
Spellcastersenjoying theirTerrariagameplaywho want a more elemental weapon should consider grabbing theAqua Scepter. This weapon releases a stream of water that hits up to nine opponents for decent 27 Damage, making it quite the efficient long-ranged weapon. The knockback effect of the Aqua Scepter makes it an efficient juggling tool.

Players must also note some disadvantages when using the Aqua Scepter, such as the inability to extinguish On Fire! (Debuff) despite being made of water. A similar weakness is seen when used in water, where the Aqua Scepter doesn’t receive special benefits or effects.
3Magic Missile
Named in reference to theD&Dspellof the same name,Magic Missileis a wand that allows players to guide their projectile to the target. At its core, the Magic Missile is a highly versatile projectile when guided, especially since it can go through tile-wide gaps and even travel through water, unlike other homing projectiles.
While its 35 Damage isn’t as potent as other weapons’ damage output, the flexibility of the Magic Missile makes it a reliable pre-Hardmode Wand for spellcasters. For instance, the Magic Missile has an inherent light quality provided it moves through space, making it a neat scout combined with Binoculars. Its high knockback alongside its AOE can push enemies away or even hit them if they’re a block away from the player.

2Flamelash
Similar to the Magic Missile, theFlamelashinTerrariagameplay lets players control yet another projectile, this time in the form of a fireball. Its extra property makes it more potent than the Magic Missile, where hitting a foe can inflict On Fire! (Debuff) that stops enemy regen while making them lose 4 HP per second.
Again like the Magic Missile, Flamelash also provides useful utility in specific situations. For instance, the fire sparks the Flamelash emits can go well below the ground even if the floor itself is solid, allowing players to view some aspects beneath them. With enough space, players can even hit the same target twice, and Flamelash can also hit enemies through thin objects such as doors and thin walls.

1Flower of Fire
Instead of a generic projectile, theFlower of Fireunleashes a ball of fire that bounces off the ground up to five times before hitting the target. On a successful hit, it can inflict On Fire! (Debuff) that can stop regeneration and deal 4 DPS, with the damage boosting to 29 DPS when Oiled.
As with other fire-related weapons, Flower of Fire stops working when making in contact with water or honey. This weapon is also notan Event-exclusive drop. However, it doesn’t use mana, making its base 48 DPS rather overkill for a pre-Hardmode Weapon. Its sheer strength outclasses all other weapons except the Star Cannon (Gun, Pre-Hardcore) in terms of DPS.
