Summary
The Marvelsoffered a new look at Park Seo-joon and Zawe Ashton’s characters, and they look like Marvel characters. But even though more info on Ashton’s villain Dar-Benn is always welcome, this new look at Park’s Prince Yan is the best yet for his mysterious ally character.
In a rather ambitious move,The Marvelsserves as a sequel to 5 Marvel projects, includingCaptain Marvel,WandaVision, andMs. Marvel. So, one might even wonder how it will have time to introduce new characters. But it looks like it will pull it off, as Park and Ashton have had their presence known in various promotional materials. In Ashton’s case, this has included making her role known as a “gray area” villain trying to restore her homeland after a civil war. But as for Park, the South Korean drama star’s role has been kept a bit cloudy in the months leading up to theCaptain Marvelsequel’s impending release. This includes even getting a good look at the guy.

Marvel’s new international poster forThe Marvelsoffers the latest look at Park’s Prince Yan. Prince Yan can be seen off to the right in his regal attire, offering a much clearer look than most of his other appearances in the movie’s marketing thus far. The poster also predictably highlights the rest of the main cast, including Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau,Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury (don’t worry, the adorably savage little kitty/flerken Goose is back too). All the while, Ashton’s Kree revolutionary warrior Dar-Benn looms below, her threat ever present.
While little has been revealed aboutPark’s character inThe Marvels, Yan has been established in the comics, albeit in a small appearance. The comics feature Carol Danvers traveling to Yan’s planet of Aladna, where the practice is that women choose the men they marry with no choice from the men. This causes conflict when a young mutant named Lila Cheney arrives via her teleportation powers and decides to marry Prince Yan. Years later, she returns as an adult and finds that the engagement is still legally binding.
Eventually, Lila asks Carol for help voiding this marriage that neither she nor Yan wants. In a twist, a conqueror named Marlo shows up (Marvel is no stranger to conquerors) and tries to win Yan’s hand in marriage by fighting Lila. Carol instead fights Marlo, defeating the warlord and winning the right to marry Yan. Instead, she relinquishes the right and gives Yan the choice to marry whomever he chooses. This ultimately results in Yan finally abolishing the original practice on Aladna, allowing everyone to choose their partner.
What does this have to do withThe Marvels? Well, likely not much. Yan is still a prince and will seemingly encounter Carol in some way. But odds are the movie isn’t holding back the reveal of lesser-known characters like Lila and Marlo. Rumors have pointed to amarriage between Carol and Prince Yan, so at least that part may be correct. But will it be the legitimate sort or the “trial by combat” variety? Maybe Dar-Benn will stand in for Marlo. Either way, fans only have a little more time to wait before seeing how this all plays out.
The Marvelswill be released theatrically (including IMAX) on May 30, 2025.
