One of the best things about horror and suspense games is the uncertainty of who will survive. Whether the game features vampires, creepy dolls, serial killers, or some other classic horror trope, there’s always something to be afraid of and some new way to die. Making the player face the consequences of their decisions is somethingThe Quarryexcels at.
Despite the brutality of its story,The Quarryisn’t totally merciless. Though a huge part of what makesThe Quarryfun and tense is the knowledge that even seemingly small decisions might get someone killed, the game does feature a unique mechanic that will let the player save some lives called Death Rewind.

What Is Death Rewind?
The Quarryis the story of nine camp counselors and the mysterious threat that pursues them through Hackett’s Quarry at the end of the summer. It’s a game that tries to make the most of its amazing cast with sharp dialog and a bevy of choices that let the player decide how characters will talk and act and ultimately which of them will live.
Notably, the game uses an auto-save feature rather than allowing the player to manually save their game. Because of this,the player is for the most part forced to live with the consequences of their decisions,for better or for worse.

Death Rewind isThe Quarry’sunique answer to the otherwise grisly and irreversible deaths of its characters. It’s hard not to get attached to characters during the course of the story, andwhen a beloved character dies,the player will want to do everything in their power to bring them back.
Death Rewind allows the player to turn back time and undo the decision that leads to a character’s death. The player only gets access to Death Rewind in one of two ways. The first is bybuying the Deluxe Editionof the game, which automatically enables the feature. The second is bycompleting the game once.On subsequent playthroughs, Death Rewind will be unlocked.
How To Rewind
If the player has unlocked Death Rewind through either of the two methods described above, they will be able to find and enable the feature in theAccessibility portion of the Options panel. If a character dies while Death Rewind is enabled, the game will pause and the player will be given the option to rewind the game in order to save that character’s life.
Death Rewind can only be used three times throughout aplaythrough ofThe Quarryso it isn’t an infinite “get out of jail free” card. Some mistakes can be undone, but others will have to be endured.

A sometimes overlooked but important point is that if the character died as a result of the player failing a Quick-Time Event, the player will need to successfully complete that QTE when they attempt it again. If they fail again,The Quarrycharacter will die again, wasting a precious use of Death Rewind. The player should always go into these situations prepared so that they don’t accidentally squander the game’s most valuable resource.
