Tom Hiddleston has become synonymous with the Marvel Cinematic Universe for his portrayal of Loki, but he has been part of several other memorable projects. Among them areCrimson Peak,I Saw the Light, andKong: Skull Island.Hiddleston will now add another role to his long list in the upcomingApple TV Plusseries,The White Darkness.
The White Darknesswill mark Hiddleston’s second project withApple TV Plus. Hiddleston stars inThe Essex Serpent, which is slated to release in May.The Essex Serpentis an adaptation of Sarah Perry’s 2016 Victorian novel of the same name. In addition to Hiddleston, the series will also star Claire Danes, Frank Dillane, and Hayley Squires.

For his latest Apple TV Plus project, Hiddleston has been cast inThe White Darkness. The limitedseries is a TV adaptationof David Grann’s 2018 non-fiction novel that centers around the life and adventures of Henry Worsley. Hiddleston will play Worsley, a former explorer and British Army Officer with dreams of following in the footsteps of his idol, Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. Worsley embarked on his final Antarctica expedition in 2015, where he aimed to complete a 1,100-mile solo journey across the Antarctic in 80 days.
The White Darknesswill be developed by Soo Hugh, creator ofPachinko. Hugh will be assisted in running the show by Mark Heyman, who co-wrotethe scripts forBlack SwanandThe Skeleton Twins.Heyman has also penned the script for the upcoming Stephen King adaptation ofThe Boogeyman. Apple Studios will produce the series with UCP. In addition to acting as the lead in the series, Hiddleston will also serve as an executive producer onThe White Darkness.
In addition to the upcoming release ofThe Essex Serpentand the filming ofThe White Darkness, Hiddleston has also been working onthe second season ofLoki. The Disney Plus series is the first Marvel Studios television show to get renewed for a second season on the streaming platform. The series will continue Loki’s journey following the repercussions of Sylvie reopening the Multiverse after killing He Who Remains. Several other Marvel Studios projects have already begun to deal with this, includingSpider-Man: No Way Homeand the upcomingDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
The White Darknesswill not be the first role Hiddleston has taken that is inspired by true events. In the biographical filmI Saw the Light, Hiddleston portrayed Hank Williams. He was joined byMarvel co-star Elizabeth Olsenin the project. Hiddleston will have a physically grueling role to prepare for inThe White Darkness, given the strenuous expeditions Worsley embarked on. However, Hiddleston has the ability to deliver a heartfelt performance to dedicate to the late explorer.
